How to Use Our GPA Calculator
Your GPA is one of the most important numbers in your academic career. Our GPA Calculator makes it easy to calculate your current GPA and plan for future semesters.
Entering Your Courses
For each course, enter:
- Course Name (optional) -- For your reference.
- Credit Hours -- The number of credits the course is worth. Most standard courses are 3 credits; labs are often 1 or 4 credits.
- Grade -- Your letter grade. The standard 4.0 scale converts as: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on.
Add as many courses as needed. The calculator weights each grade by credit hours so that a 4-credit course has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit course.
Understanding the Formula
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
Where quality points = grade points x credit hours for each course.
For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course:
- Quality points: (4.0 x 3) + (3.0 x 4) = 12 + 12 = 24
- Total credits: 3 + 4 = 7
- GPA: 24 / 7 = 3.43
Planning Ahead
Use the calculator to run scenarios. Enter your current cumulative GPA and credits, then add next semester's planned courses with target grades to see how your GPA would change. This is especially useful if you need a specific GPA for graduate school admissions, scholarships, or honors programs.
