How to Use Our Dog Age Calculator
The old "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. Dogs age at different rates depending on their size and breed. Our Dog Age Calculator uses modern veterinary research to give you a more accurate conversion.

Human Equivalent Age
39 years
What to Enter
- Dog's Age -- Your dog's age in calendar years.
- Breed Size -- Small (under 20 lbs), medium (20-50 lbs), large (50-100 lbs), or giant (over 100 lbs). Size significantly affects aging rate.
How Dogs Really Age
Dogs mature rapidly in their first two years -- a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old dog is about 24 in human years. After that, each additional year adds roughly 4-5 human years, but the rate varies by size:
- Small dogs age more slowly after maturity and often live 14-16 years
- Large dogs age faster and typically live 10-12 years
- Giant breeds age fastest, with lifespans of 7-10 years
A 10-year-old Chihuahua might be equivalent to a 56-year-old human, while a 10-year-old Great Dane is closer to 66.
