How to Use Our Sales Tax Calculator

Sales tax varies by state, county, and even city. Our Sales Tax Calculator handles both adding tax to a price and extracting tax from a total.

Two Calculation Modes

Add Tax to a Price

Enter the pre-tax price and your tax rate. The calculator shows the tax amount and the total price. For example, a $50 item at 8.25% tax: tax = $4.13, total = $54.13.

Find the Pre-Tax Price

Enter the total amount paid and the tax rate. The calculator works backward to find the original price and the tax included. Useful when reviewing receipts or expense reports.

Finding Your Tax Rate

Sales tax rates in the US range from 0% (Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire, Alaska) to over 10% in some jurisdictions when state and local rates are combined. The highest combined rates are found in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas.

Your total rate is: state rate + county rate + city rate + special district rate

Check your recent receipts for your exact local rate.
