Use it when you're splitting a check unevenly by what people actually ordered but still want your own tip based on just your portion — for example, if your itemized subtotal was $22 out of an $80 group bill, entering 22 there computes the tip on $22 rather than the full $80. Leave it at 0 for the common case of tipping on the whole bill.

'You owe' is your own itemized subtotal plus the tip computed on that subtotal — what you personally hand over. 'Table total with tip' applies the same tip rate to the entire check, which is what the group collectively owes the restaurant. Entering a $22 portion of an $80 bill at 18% gives you $25.96 to pay, while the table's full obligation is $94.40. When Your Items Only is left at 0 the two figures describe the same total.

18% is commonly treated as a standard baseline for adequate table service in US sit-down restaurants, with 20% or more often reserved for excellent service. Some diners tip closer to 15% for counter service or delivery, so treat these as general conventions rather than a fixed rule — local custom and service quality both play a role.

It doesn't — the number of people splitting the check only changes the Per Person figure, dividing the same total evenly across everyone. The Tip amount itself is determined solely by the bill (or itemized portion) and the tip percentage, so adding more people to the split lowers each individual's share without changing the total gratuity paid to the server.

Only partially — entering your itemized portion gets your tip calculated correctly on your own spending via the You Owe output, but Per Person and Table Total with Tip still assume an even split of the full bill across everyone. For a fully itemized per-person breakdown, you'd need to divide each person's own subtotal plus their own tip share separately outside this calculator.
