This calculator starts from a baseline life expectancy of 76 years for men and 81 for women -- rough US population averages -- and then applies flat adjustments for four lifestyle and health factors: an 8-year penalty for current smoking, a bonus-only exercise adjustment that scales with weekly hours (it never subtracts years, only adds none, some, or more), a BMI adjustment, and a penalty for a family history of early death. Every adjustment is a step function rather than a smooth curve: BMI, for example, only changes the outcome when it crosses a boundary (under 18.5, over 25, or over 30), so at this calculator's default BMI of 22 and default 2 hours of weekly exercise, neither one currently moves the Life Expectancy figure at all -- both sit inside a flat, no-adjustment band, and only crossing one of the boundaries changes the result. Current age likewise has zero effect on the Life Expectancy output itself; it is used only afterward, to compute Remaining Years as Life Expectancy minus your current age. Smoking status is the adjustment with the largest single swing (a flat 8-year reduction), independent of every other input. This is a simplified illustrative model, not a substitute for the mortality tables actuaries and insurers use professionally -- it does not account for specific medical conditions, occupation, geography, or the many other factors that go into a real actuarial or underwriting life-expectancy estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't changing my BMI move the result at the default value?
BMI is applied as a step function with fixed boundaries: below 18.5 subtracts 2 years, above 30 subtracts 5, above 25 subtracts 1, and anything from 18.5 up to 25 gets no adjustment at all. The calculator's default BMI is 22, which sits inside that flat middle band, so nudging it up or down by a point or two has no effect on Life Expectancy until it actually crosses the 18.5 or 25 boundary.
How much does smoking status change the estimate?
Smoking applies a flat 8-year reduction to life expectancy regardless of any other input -- it does not scale with age, sex, or how much you exercise. That makes it the single largest fixed adjustment in this calculator's model, reflecting the well-documented association between smoking and shortened life expectancy in population-level health data.
Why is my current age unrelated to the Life Expectancy figure?
Life Expectancy here is computed purely from sex plus the lifestyle and health adjustments (smoking, exercise, BMI, family history) -- your current age never enters that formula. Age is used in a separate step to compute Remaining Years, which subtracts your current age from the already-calculated Life Expectancy figure, so the two outputs answer different questions from the same inputs.
Does more weekly exercise always increase the estimate?
Only when it crosses a threshold. The calculator awards a 2-year bonus at 1.5 hours per week or more, and a larger 4-year bonus at 3 hours per week or more, with no bonus below 1.5 hours -- and no additional bonus for exercising well beyond 3 hours either. That means going from 2 hours to 2.5 hours per week (still under the 3-hour threshold) produces no change, while crossing from 2.9 to 3.1 hours does.
