How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your kiln's interior volume in cubic inches (a typical hobby kiln is 4000–8000 cu in).
- Estimate the average volume of each piece in cubic inches — a small mug is roughly 40–80 cu in.
- Enter the vertical shelf spacing in inches, which must be taller than your tallest piece.
- Enter the number of kiln shelves you have available.
- Read the total estimated pieces per firing, pieces per shelf, and kiln utilization percentage.
- Adjust shelf spacing or piece size to optimize utilization before scheduling your firing.
