Deck Cost Calculator

Estimate the total cost of building a deck including materials, railing, stairs, and labor based on size and material type.

This calculator estimates total deck cost by combining a per-square-foot material rate, a per-linear-foot railing rate, a flat stair-set charge, and a labor estimate set at 1.5 times the material cost. Deck Material has by far the largest effect on Total Estimated Cost of any input on this calculator -- because it sets the per-square-foot rate ($15 for pressure treated up to $40 for PVC) that both the material cost AND the labor estimate are built from, switching from pressure treated to PVC at these default dimensions moves total cost by well over 100%, far more than resizing the deck itself. Deck Length and Deck Width both increase Total Estimated Cost -- deck area feeds directly into material cost, and perimeter (which drives railing cost) grows with both dimensions too, though length has a somewhat larger effect than width at this calculator's default (rectangular, longer-than-wide) proportions. Railing Type and Stair Sets add their own cost on top, but neither swings the total anywhere near as much as the material choice does. This is a rough per-unit cost estimate using national averages -- actual material prices, local labor rates, permit fees, and site conditions (grade, ledger attachment, footings) can all shift real costs substantially.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the deck length and width in feet to calculate the total deck area.
  2. Select your decking material — pressure treated, cedar, composite, or PVC — to set the cost per sq ft.
  3. Choose a railing type (wood, composite, or metal) or none; cost is applied per linear foot of perimeter.
  4. Enter the number of stair sets needed (estimated at ~$500 each).
  5. Review the total estimated cost broken down into materials, railing, stairs, and labor.

What each input means

Deck Length
Length of the deck in feet.
Deck Width
Width of the deck in feet.
Deck Material
Type of decking material to use.
Railing Type
Style and material of railing.
Stair Sets
Number of stair sets (~$500 each).

Frequently Asked Questions

What has the biggest effect on total deck cost?

Deck Material dominates the total -- it sets the per-square-foot rate for both the material cost itself and the labor estimate (calculated as 1.5 times material cost), so switching from pressure treated ($15/sqft) to PVC ($40/sqft) at these default dimensions more than doubles the total, a far bigger swing than resizing the deck produces.

Does making the deck longer cost more than making it wider?

Both increase Total Estimated Cost, since deck area (which drives material cost) and perimeter (which drives railing cost) both grow with either dimension. At this calculator's default proportions, Deck Length has a somewhat larger effect than Deck Width, though the difference is modest compared to the swing from changing deck material.

Why does the material choice affect labor cost, not just material cost?

Labor Estimate is calculated as 1.5 times Material Cost, so it scales directly with whichever per-square-foot material rate you select -- a pricier material like PVC doesn't just cost more to buy, it also raises the estimated labor line in this calculator's formula, compounding the total cost swing.

How much does adding a stair set add to the total cost?

Each stair set adds a flat $500 to Total Estimated Cost, regardless of deck size or material choice -- Stairs Cost is simply the stair set count multiplied by that fixed per-set rate, so it's a smaller and more predictable line item than the material or railing costs.
