How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Container Volume (gallons) and Number of Containers for your storage area inventory.
  2. Set the Spill Scenario (%) — typically 100% for a single catastrophic release or lower for a partial breach scenario.
  3. Enter the Specific Gravity of the material (water = 1.0) to calculate the spill weight in pounds.
  4. Review Potential Spill (gallons) and Spill Weight (lbs) to size response resources including absorbents.
  5. Check Required Containment (gallons) to confirm your secondary containment system is adequately sized per EPA SPCC.
  6. Use Absorbent Needed (lbs) to stock the appropriate emergency response supplies at the storage location.
