Surety Bond Calculator
Calculate surety bond premium based on bond amount, credit score, business experience, and bond type.
About this calculator
A surety bond premium is not a flat fee — it's calculated as a percentage of the bond's face value (Bond Amount), and this calculator builds that percentage from several underwriting factors layered on top of each other. The starting point is Personal Credit Score, sorted into tiers roughly matching real-world surety underwriting: 700+ typically qualifies for the lowest base rate (around 1.5% here), 650-699 a moderate rate (around 4%), 600-649 a higher rate (around 7.5%), and below 600 the highest tier (around 12%) — credit score is usually the single biggest driver of bond cost because it's the underwriter's primary signal of default risk.
That base rate is then adjusted by three multipliers: Financial Strength (a weak balance sheet raises the rate, a strong one lowers it), Years in Business (10+ years of experience earns a discount, since a longer track record reduces perceived risk), and Bond Type (license/permit bonds carry a lower risk multiplier than court/judicial bonds, since the obligations they cover differ). Because credit score determines a discrete rate tier rather than a smooth curve, premium doesn't fall gradually as your score improves — it drops in steps each time you cross a tier threshold (600, 650, 700), so a score of 699 sits in a materially more expensive tier than a score of 700, even though the two are only one point apart.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the bond amount required by the contract or license.
- Select the bond type (contract/performance, license/permit, court/judicial, or fidelity).
- Input your personal credit score.
- Review the estimated bond premium (typically 0.7–22% of bond amount depending on credit and the other factors).

How the result changes with Personal Credit Score
| Personal Credit Score | Annual Bond Premium |
|---|---|
| 500 | $55,200.00 |
| 540 | $55,200.00 |
| 850 | $6,900.00 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does credit score matter so much for a business bond premium?
Credit score is the underwriter's primary proxy for default risk on a surety bond, since the bond guarantees the obligee (the party requiring the bond) will be made whole if the principal fails to perform — a lower credit score signals a higher chance of that happening, which the base rate tiers in this calculator reflect directly. It typically has a bigger effect on premium than any single other factor, including years in business or bond type.
Why did my premium jump sharply when my credit score dropped a few points?
Credit score maps to a discrete rate tier rather than a smooth sliding scale in real surety underwriting, and this calculator mirrors that: crossing a tier boundary (600, 650, or 700) changes the base rate applied to the entire bond amount, not just the marginal difference. That means a score of 699 versus 700 — one point apart — can land in noticeably different premium tiers, even though scores of 690 and 699 within the same tier produce identical rates.
Does more experience in the business always lower the premium?
Yes, in this calculator's model — 5+ years earns a discount factor, and 10+ years earns a larger one, reflecting the real-world underwriting logic that an established track record in the trade reduces perceived risk. Experience is a smaller lever than credit score, though: the discount factors here are modest (roughly 8-15% off) compared to the multiple-times difference between credit tiers.
Why does bond type change the premium for the same bond amount?
Different bond types cover different obligations and carry different claim frequencies in practice — license/permit bonds tend to see fewer and smaller claims than contract/performance or court/judicial bonds, so this calculator applies a lower risk multiplier to license/permit bonds and a higher one to court/judicial bonds, holding everything else (credit score, amount, experience) fixed.
