Apiary Layout Planner
Plan your apiary layout with optimal hive spacing, row configuration, and windbreak setbacks. Calculates total space needed and drift risk.
About this calculator
This calculator lays out hives on a simple row-and-column grid, then sizes the total footprint from three site-planning conventions common in beekeeping extension guidance: hives are spaced by their entered center-to-center distance within a row (with a fixed 2 ft allowance for the hive body itself), rows are separated by roughly 8 ft to leave working room for a beekeeper to stand and open hives from behind, and the whole grid gets a windbreak setback added on every side to buffer wind exposure and give bees clear flight-path space away from fences, hedges, or buildings. Hive count is distributed evenly across the number of rows you specify (rounding up, so the last row may hold fewer hives than the others), which is what determines both the 'hives per row' figure and how wide each row ends up. Bee drift — where foragers return to the wrong hive, spreading disease and disrupting colony dynamics — is flagged as a risk based on spacing and row density: tightly packed hives (especially in a long, uniform row) meaningfully increase drift because returning bees have a harder time distinguishing their own entrance from a nearly-identical neighbor a few feet away, which is why wider spacing, staggered positions, or varied hive coloring are standard mitigations in apiary design.
For larger operations (more than 10 hives), the calculator also flags a recommended vehicle access path, since hauling supers, feed, and equipment on foot becomes impractical past that scale. Total acreage is a straightforward unit conversion from the calculated square footage, useful for evaluating whether a given parcel or lot can accommodate your planned hive count.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Number of Hives, Spacing Between Hives, and Number of Rows.
- Set Windbreak Setback.
- Review the Total Area Needed (sq ft) result.
- Use Total Acres (acres) and Hives per Row to inform your decision.
- Use the chart to visualize the results and explore different scenarios by adjusting inputs.
How the result changes with Windbreak Setback
| Windbreak Setback | Total Area Needed |
|---|---|
| 7.5 | 725 sq ft |
| 11 | 1,152 sq ft |
| 23 | 3,360 sq ft |
| 38 | 7,740 sq ft |
What each input means
- Number of Hives
- Total hives to place in the apiary. Include planned expansion.
- Spacing Between Hives
- Distance between hive centers in a row. Minimum 3 ft; 4–6 ft reduces bee drift between colonies.
- Number of Rows
- Number of rows in the apiary. Rows should be 6–10 ft apart for comfortable working space behind hives.
- Windbreak Setback
- Distance from windbreak (fence, hedge, or building) to first hive row. Provides wind protection and flight path clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the calculator recommend south to southeast entrance orientation?
Facing hive entrances south to southeast is a widely used beekeeping convention: it captures morning sun to warm the hive and get bees flying earlier in the day, while typically facing away from prevailing cold or harsh winds in much of the temperate northern hemisphere, which reduces stress on the colony during cooler months. Local wind patterns and site obstructions can override this general rule, so it should be adjusted for your specific location.
How much does increasing hive spacing actually grow my total footprint?
Because row width scales directly with spacing between hives in a row, increasing spacing has a proportional effect on the site's total width and therefore its total area — going from tightly packed hives to wider spacing can meaningfully increase the land footprint required, which is the real tradeoff beekeepers weigh between drift reduction (favoring more spacing) and land efficiency (favoring less).
Why does the calculator only recommend a vehicle access path above 10 hives?
Below roughly 10 hives, most beekeepers can reasonably carry supplies, empty supers, and harvested honey to and from a bee yard on foot or with a hand cart, but larger operations generate enough equipment and honey volume that vehicle access for hauling becomes a practical necessity rather than a convenience — this calculator uses 10 hives as that rough dividing line and adds a 12 ft wide path allowance once you cross it.
What exactly counts as a 'windbreak setback,' and why does it get added on every side?
The windbreak setback is the buffer distance between your outermost hives and any wind-blocking feature like a fence, hedge, or building — the calculator applies it symmetrically on all sides of the hive grid because bees need clear flight paths in and out from every direction, not just the entrance-facing side, and a windbreak too close on any edge can obstruct returning foragers as much as it blocks wind.
