Biochar needed (tons/acre)
4.36
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Field size (acres), Incorporation depth (inches), and Target biochar (% by volume).
- Set Soil type (1=sand, 2=loam, 3=clay), Biochar cost ($/ton), and Current soil pH.
- Review the Biochar needed (tons/acre) result.
- Use Total biochar (tons) and CO2e sequestered (tons) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Incorporation depth (inches)
| Incorporation depth (inches) | Biochar needed (tons/acre) |
|---|---|
| 2.1 | 1.52 |
| 4.85 | 3.52 |
| 8.15 | 5.92 |
| 11 | 7.99 |
What each input means
- Field size (acres)
- Acreage to be amended with biochar.
- Incorporation depth (inches)
- Depth to incorporate biochar into soil. Typical: 4-8 inches.
- Target biochar (% by volume)
- Target biochar percentage by soil volume. Research-recommended: 1-5%.
- Soil type (1=sand, 2=loam, 3=clay)
- 1 = Sandy, 2 = Loam, 3 = Clay. Affects bulk density and benefit estimates.
- Biochar cost ($/ton)
- Delivered cost per ton. Range: $400-$1,500 depending on source and quality.
- Current soil pH
- Current soil pH from soil test. Biochar raises pH in acidic soils.
What each result means
- Biochar needed (tons/acre)
- Tons of biochar required per acre at the target volume percentage.
- Total biochar (tons)
- Total biochar needed for the entire field.
- CO2e sequestered (tons)
- Long-term carbon dioxide equivalent locked in soil for 100+ years.
- Cost per acre ($)
- Biochar material cost per acre (excludes application labor).
- Total material cost ($)
- Total biochar material cost for the project.
- Water retention improvement (%)
- Estimated improvement in soil water-holding capacity.
- Projected soil pH
- Estimated soil pH after biochar incorporation.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersField size (acres) = 10, Incorporation depth (inches) = 6, Target biochar (% by volume) = 2, Soil type (1=sand, 2=loam, 3=clay) = 2 = 6 input(s) provided
- Calculate Biochar neededBiochar needed = biocharLbs / 20004.36 = 4.36
- Calculate Total biocharTotal biochar = biocharTonsPerAcre * acres43.6 = 43.6
- Calculate CO2e sequesteredCO2e sequestered = carbonFixedTons * 3.667119.8 = 119.8
