NDVI Crop Health Calculator
Assess crop health from NIR and red band reflectance values to estimate NDVI and potential yield impact.
About this calculator
NDVI Value comes from comparing two reflectance bands: near-infrared (NIR) light, which healthy leaf tissue reflects strongly, and red light, which healthy chlorophyll absorbs for photosynthesis. Raising NIR Reflectance always raises NDVI, while raising Red Reflectance always lowers it, since NDVI is defined as the difference between the two divided by their sum -- a classic remote-sensing formula, introduced by Rouse et al. (1974) at NASA and documented by NASA's Earth Observatory program, that underlies vegetation monitoring across satellite and drone crop-scouting platforms today. Health Assessment then sorts that NDVI number into five bands, from Excellent (0.70 and up, no yield impact assumed) down through Bare Soil / Severe Stress (below 0.15, a steep assumed yield hit), and Yield Impact is simply a fixed percentage tied to whichever band the NDVI reading lands in.
Total Revenue Loss multiplies that yield impact by Expected Yield, Crop Price, and Affected Area together, so any of those three inputs moving up raises the dollar estimate proportionally once a stress band with a nonzero impact has been reached. It's worth being explicit about what this calculator does not do: it does not model NDVI itself changing over the growing season, does not distinguish disease stress from moisture or nutrient stress, and uses fixed yield-impact percentages per health band rather than a crop-specific or field-calibrated curve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does raising Red Reflectance lower the NDVI Value?
Healthy, chlorophyll-rich crop canopy absorbs red light for photosynthesis rather than reflecting it, so a higher Red Reflectance reading signals less healthy or less dense vegetation. Since NDVI is calculated as (NIR minus Red) divided by (NIR plus Red) -- the formula introduced by Rouse et al. in 1974 and still documented today by NASA's Earth Observatory program as the standard vegetation-health index -- a higher red value shrinks the numerator and grows the denominator at once, pulling NDVI down.
How does the calculator turn an NDVI number into a dollar figure?
NDVI Value is sorted into one of five health bands, each carrying a fixed assumed Yield Impact percentage (0% for Excellent down to -60% for Bare Soil / Severe Stress). That percentage is applied to your Expected Yield to get a per-acre yield loss, which is then multiplied by Crop Price and Affected Area to produce Total Revenue Loss.
If Expected Yield is high but the field shows severe stress, is the revenue loss estimate reliable?
The dollar figure scales linearly with Expected Yield, Crop Price, and Affected Area once a stress band with a nonzero yield impact applies, so a higher expected yield does produce a larger loss estimate at the same stress level. Treat it as a rough planning figure, though -- the underlying yield-impact percentages are fixed approximations, not calibrated to your specific crop or field history.
Does a small change in NIR or Red Reflectance always change the Health Assessment category?
Not necessarily -- NDVI Value moves continuously with both reflectance inputs, but Health Assessment only changes when that NDVI crosses one of the five band boundaries (0.70, 0.50, 0.30, or 0.15). A small reflectance change can shift the NDVI number without moving it across a boundary, leaving the health category and Yield Impact percentage unchanged.
