Reforestation Cost
Calculate the total cost of reforestation including seedlings, planting labor, and site preparation across a given acreage.
About this calculator
Total Reforestation Cost is Area to Plant multiplied by three per-acre cost streams added together: seedling cost, planting labor, and site preparation — which is why Cost Per Acre stays exactly flat as Area to Plant changes: every cost component here scales linearly with acreage, so there's no economy of scale built into the model (bulk seedling discounts or fixed mobilization costs for equipment aren't modeled). Total Seedlings adds a 10% mortality buffer on top of your target planting density (Seedlings Per Acre), reflecting that a share of newly planted seedlings die in their first year from drought, browse damage, frost heave, or poor planting technique — buying only the exact target count typically leaves a stand under target density by the time it establishes.
Tree Spacing is derived geometrically from Seedlings Per Acre assuming a square grid (43,560 sq ft per acre divided by trees per acre, then square-rooted), which is a simplification — real planting crews commonly use offset or contour-following patterns on sloped ground rather than a strict grid.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Area to Plant in acres and the target Seedlings Per Acre (TPA) planting density.
- Enter Seedling Cost per tree, Planting Labor per acre, and Site Preparation cost per acre.
- Review Total Reforestation Cost and Cost Per Acre to compare against grant funding or timber values.
- Check Total Seedlings (with 10% buffer) to order the correct quantity accounting for mortality.
- Use the cost breakdown (seedlings, labor, site prep) to identify where savings are possible.
How the result changes with Area to Plant
| Area to Plant | Total Reforestation Cost | Cost Per Acre |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | $13,562.50 | $542.50 |
| 38 | $20,615.00 | $542.50 |
| 75 | $40,687.50 | $542.50 |
| 125 | $67,812.50 | $542.50 |
What each input means
- Area to Plant
- Total acreage to be reforested.
- Seedlings Per Acre
- Target planting density in trees per acre. Typical: 400-700 for timber, 200-400 for hardwoods.
- Seedling Cost
- Cost per seedling. Bare-root: $0.15-$0.50, container: $0.50-$2.00.
- Planting Labor
- Cost of planting labor per acre including hand planting or machine planting.
- Site Preparation
- Cost per acre for site preparation: burning, herbicide, mechanical clearing, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Cost Per Acre stay the same no matter how many acres I plant?
Every cost component in this model — seedlings, planting labor, and site preparation — is priced per acre and simply multiplied by Area to Plant, so there's no volume discount or fixed-cost spreading built in. A real large reforestation project often gets better per-seedling pricing or spreads equipment mobilization costs over more acres, which this calculator does not model.
Why does Total Seedlings exceed Seedlings Per Acre times Area to Plant?
Total Seedlings adds a 10% mortality buffer on top of the raw target count, since a meaningful share of newly planted seedlings typically fail to establish in their first year from drought stress, animal browse, frost heave, or planting error. Ordering only the bare target count usually leaves the stand under its intended density once mortality losses show up.
How is Tree Spacing calculated from planting density?
Tree Spacing assumes seedlings are set on a square grid: it divides the 43,560 square feet in an acre by Seedlings Per Acre to get square feet per tree, then takes the square root to get the side length of that square. Real-world planting often follows contours or offset rows rather than a strict grid, so treat this as an average spacing figure, not a literal planting layout.
What isn't included in this cost estimate?
The model covers seedlings (with a mortality buffer), planting labor, and site preparation, but not follow-up costs like herbicide release treatments, replanting failed spots in year two or three, fencing or tree shelters against browse, or ongoing monitoring — all common line items in a full reforestation budget beyond the initial planting.
