Telemetry Data Budget Calculator

Estimate cellular data usage and cost from IoT sensor count, reporting frequency, and message size.

About this calculator

Data Usage responds inversely to Reporting Interval: a shorter interval means far more transmissions per month, so cutting the interval from every few minutes down to every few seconds can multiply monthly data usage many times over, while stretching it out shrinks usage just as sharply. Sensor Count, Message Size, Active Hours per Day, and Active Days per Month all scale usage linearly and in the same direction — doubling any one of them roughly doubles total data, holding everything else fixed, and each moves the result by roughly the same proportional amount as Reporting Interval does. Data Plan Cost per GB is the one input that has zero effect on Data Usage itself: it only converts the already-computed gigabytes into a dollar figure for Monthly Data Cost and Annual Data Cost, so changing your plan's price does not change how much data your sensor network actually transmits.

The calculator assumes every sensor reports on a fixed, uniform schedule with a constant payload size — it has no allowance for retransmissions on lost packets, protocol overhead beyond the raw payload (headers, acknowledgments, connection setup), firmware updates, or bursty event- triggered reporting, all of which can push real-world cellular usage meaningfully above this estimate. Treat the result as a floor for planning a data plan, not a guaranteed ceiling.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Number of Sensors, Reporting Interval, and Message Size.
  2. Set Active Hours per Day, Active Days per Month, and Data Plan Cost.
  3. Review Data Usage (MB/mo) and Monthly Data Cost ($).
  4. Use Total Reports/Month and Data Usage (GB/mo) to inform your decision.
  5. Use the chart to visualize the results and explore different scenarios by adjusting inputs.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    6 parameters
    Number of Sensors = 20, Reporting Interval = 60, Message Size = 200, Active Hours per Day = 24, Active Days per Month = 30, Data Plan Cost = 5 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Data Usage
    Data Usage
    164.79 = 164.79
  3. Calculate Monthly Data Cost
    Monthly Data Cost
    0.8 = $0.8
  4. Calculate Total Reports/Month
    Total Reports/Month
    864000 = 864000
  5. Calculate Data Usage
    Data Usage
    0.161 = 0.161

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does shortening the Reporting Interval increase Data Usage?

Reporting Interval sets how often each sensor transmits, and transmissions per month scale inversely with it — halving the interval roughly doubles the number of reports sent, and therefore roughly doubles total Data Usage. Sensor Count, Message Size, and the two active-time inputs move Data Usage by a comparable proportional amount for an equivalent percentage change, so no single one of these five inputs dwarfs the others.

Does raising my Data Plan Cost per Sensor Month change how much data I use?

No. Data Plan Cost per GB only affects Monthly Data Cost and Annual Data Cost by converting the already-calculated gigabytes into dollars — it has zero effect on Data Usage itself. Your sensors transmit the same amount of data regardless of what your cellular carrier charges per gigabyte.

Does this estimate include retransmissions or protocol overhead?

No. The calculator multiplies a fixed message size by a fixed reporting schedule to estimate raw payload data only. Real cellular telemetry also carries protocol overhead (packet headers, connection handshakes, acknowledgments) and retransmissions when packets are lost, both of which typically push actual usage above this floor estimate, sometimes substantially depending on network conditions.

How does adding more sensors affect the monthly cost?

Sensor Count scales Data Usage — and therefore Monthly Data Cost — linearly and proportionally: doubling the number of sensors roughly doubles both total data and total cost, since every sensor is assumed to transmit on the same schedule with the same message size. Cost per Sensor per Month stays roughly constant as you add sensors under that assumption.
