Boat Detailing Cost Calculator
Cleaning and wax cost from boat length and condition.
About this calculator
This calculator prices a professional detail job the way most marine detailers actually quote it: a per-foot exterior rate that scales with hull condition, plus flat add-ons for the extras you select. Hull condition drives the base number the most — a light wash-and-wax at $12/ft (good condition) roughly triples to $38/ft once the gelcoat is oxidized enough to need heavy compounding and restoration, since cutting through oxidation is slow, abrasive work rather than a quick wipe-down. Interior detailing, when selected, is estimated at 65% of whatever the exterior cost comes to — not a flat rate — because cabin size and surface count scale with the boat, same as the hull does. Canvas/Eisenglass cleaning and metal polishing are simple per-foot add-ons layered on top when selected.
Labor hours follow the same condition-based logic (0.15 to 0.40 hours per foot), with a smaller bump added when interior work is included, and a flat 10% is added to the subtotal for products and consumables (wax, compound, interior cleaners, microfiber). The result is a rough professional-service estimate, not a quote — real detailers price site visits, extreme oxidation, or gelcoat that needs wet-sanding differently, and a DIY job skips labor entirely in exchange for your own time. Use it to sanity-check a quote or budget before calling around, keeping in mind actual local labor rates and boat-specific complications (teak trim, extensive brightwork, multi-hull layouts) can push the real number meaningfully higher or lower than this per-foot model.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Boat length (ft), Hull Condition, and Good (light wash & wax).
- Set Fair (oxidation removal), Poor (heavy compound/restoration), and Interior detail (0=no, 1=yes).
- Adjust Canvas / Eisenglass (0=no, 1=yes), Metal polish (0=no, 1=yes) as needed.
- Review the Total detailing cost ($) result.
- Use Exterior wash & wax ($) and Interior detail ($) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Boat length (ft)
| Boat length (ft) | Total detailing cost |
|---|---|
| 13 | $519.09 |
| 20 | $798.60 |
| 39 | $1,557.27 |
| 65 | $2,595.45 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does hull condition change the price so much between good and poor?
Condition selects the exterior rate directly: $12/ft for good (light wash and wax), $22/ft for fair (oxidation removal and compounding), and $38/ft for poor (heavy compound and restoration). That roughly 3x spread reflects labor intensity, not materials — cutting through heavy oxidation with a rotary buffer and multiple compound passes takes far longer per foot than a wash-and-wax pass, and the calculator's hours-per-foot figure (0.15 to 0.40) scales the same way.
Why is interior detailing priced as a percentage of exterior cost instead of a flat rate?
The calculator sets interior cost at 65% of whatever the exterior cost comes out to, because cabin size, upholstery area, and surface count scale with boat length the same way the hull's exterior surface does. A 20-foot boat with a small cabin and a 45-foot boat with a full salon both get interior priced relative to their own exterior number rather than a one-size-fits-all fee.
Do canvas cleaning and metal polishing get more expensive if the hull condition is poor?
No. Canvas/Eisenglass cleaning ($7.50/ft) and metal polishing ($6/ft) are flat per-foot add-ons that don't reference the condition multiplier at all — only the exterior wash-and-wax rate and labor hours change with condition. Selecting poor condition raises exterior and interior cost but leaves canvas and metal costs unchanged for the same boat length.
What does the 10% added to the subtotal actually cover?
It's an estimate for products and consumables — wax, rubbing compound, interior cleaners, and microfiber towels — applied as 10% of the combined exterior, interior, canvas, and metal-polish subtotal before any labor-hours figure is calculated. It scales with job size but isn't itemized by specific product.
