About this calculator
Your marginal tax bracket tells you what rate applies to your next dollar of income, but it says almost nothing about what you actually pay overall — and that's the gap this calculator closes. It takes the dollar amounts you actually paid (or had withheld) in federal, state, and FICA income taxes, plus your annual property and sales tax, and simply divides each against your gross income to get a true percentage. Because it works from taxes paid rather than statutory brackets, it automatically captures the effect of deductions, credits, and the progressive bracket structure — someone in the 24% federal bracket routinely has an effective federal rate well under that, since only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. The calculator reports rates broken out by tax type (federal, state, FICA) and rolled up into two totals: an income-tax-only effective rate and a total-all-taxes rate that folds in property and sales tax as well.
From the grand total it derives two intuitive framings — "Tax Freedom Day" (the day of the year, out of 365, when your total tax burden would be paid off if you worked straight through from January 1st) and hours per 40-hour work week spent earning your tax bill. Both are illustrative simplifications, not literal schedules: real tax timing doesn't work that way. The biggest input pitfall is using your marginal bracket instead of dollars actually paid — pull the real figures from your tax return, W-2, and property tax bill for an accurate result, and note that FICA has its own wage cap that this calculator does not model for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my effective tax rate so much lower than my tax bracket?
Your marginal bracket only applies to your last dollar of taxable income, while this calculator's rate is total taxes paid divided by your entire gross income. Because of the progressive bracket structure, deductions, and credits, only a slice of your income is ever taxed at your top marginal rate — the rest is taxed at lower brackets or not at all. It's normal to be in the 24% federal bracket while your effective federal rate here comes out well under 15%.
Should I use my W-2 withholding or my actual tax liability for federal and state tax paid?
Use your actual tax liability — the total tax you owed for the year on your return (Form 1040 line 22 for federal), not just what was withheld from paychecks. Withholding and liability often differ because of refunds or amounts owed, and mixing the two will skew every rate this calculator computes, including your take-home rate and after-tax income.
Why isn't my FICA rate exactly 7.65%?
The calculator divides the FICA dollars you enter by your total gross income, not just your wages, so the rate will only equal 7.65% if all your income is W-2 wages under the Social Security wage base. Once wages exceed the annual Social Security cap, the 6.2% portion stops applying to income above that threshold — a detail this calculator doesn't model — so high earners will see an effective FICA rate noticeably below 7.65%.
What does Tax Freedom Day actually represent here?
It converts your total effective tax rate into a day of the year (out of 365) by multiplying the rate by 365 — for example, a 30% total rate lands around day 110, or mid-April. It's a simplified, illustrative framing for how much of the year's income goes to taxes, not a literal claim that you pay nothing before that date and everything after; in reality taxes are withheld and paid continuously throughout the year.
Does this calculator account for sales tax I paid on specific big purchases?
It only uses whatever single annual sales-tax figure you enter for 'Estimated Annual Sales Tax,' so a big one-time purchase (a car, for instance) needs to be folded into that estimate yourself if you want it reflected. The calculator doesn't itemize purchases or apply a state sales tax rate to a spending total — it treats sales tax paid as a flat annual dollar input like any other tax category.
