Transportation True Cost Calculator

Compare the total monthly cost of owning a car vs public transit, rideshare, and biking to find the cheapest option.

About this calculator

Most people budget for a car payment and call it done, but the payment is usually the smallest piece of what a car actually costs. This calculator adds up six real monthly line items — loan or lease payment, insurance, gas or charging, maintenance and repairs, parking, and a catch-all for car washes and tolls — into one Total Car Cost figure, then stands that number next to whatever you spend on public transit, rideshare apps, and bike upkeep. Whichever of the four options comes out lowest is flagged as the cheapest, and the gap between that option and your current car cost is projected out to an annual savings figure so a monthly difference that looks trivial (say, $60) reads as what it really is over a year ($720).

It also divides your total car cost by monthly miles driven to give a cost-per-mile figure, which is handy for comparing against the IRS standard mileage rate or a per-mile rideshare estimate. The biggest thing to get right here is completeness on the car side: irregular costs like annual registration, a new tire set, or an unplanned repair rarely make it into a "typical month" estimate, which quietly understates true car cost and makes owning look more competitive than it is. It's also worth remembering this is a pure cost comparison — it doesn't weigh time, convenience, weather exposure, or the flexibility of having a car on demand, all of which matter just as much as the dollar figure when deciding how you actually want to get around.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter all car-related monthly costs: payment, insurance, gas, maintenance, parking, and miscellaneous.
  2. Add public transit and rideshare monthly spending to compare all options side by side.
  3. Input your monthly mileage to calculate cost per mile for car ownership.
  4. Review Total Car Cost, Total Transit Cost, and Total Rideshare Cost to find the cheapest option.
  5. Check Annual Savings Switching to see how much you'd save per year by moving to a lower-cost transport mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does "Cheapest Option" sometimes just say "Car" even though I'm curious about switching?

The calculator compares your four monthly totals — Total Car Cost, transit, rideshare, and bike — and flags whichever is numerically lowest. If your car cost, once every line item is added up, still comes in under transit or rideshare given the numbers you entered, "Car" will show as cheapest; it only reflects the dollar totals you provided, not an assumption that alternatives are always better.

How is Annual Savings (Cheapest vs Car) calculated, and does it assume I fully replace my car?

It takes the monthly gap between your Total Car Cost and whichever option is cheapest, then multiplies by 12. It's a straight linear projection — it assumes you'd realize that exact monthly saving every month of the year, and it doesn't account for one-time costs of switching, like selling the car or buying a bike.

Why does Car Cost Per Mile use my total car cost instead of just gas?

Car Cost Per Mile divides your full Total Car Cost — payment, insurance, gas, maintenance, parking, and miscellaneous fees combined — by your monthly mileage, so it reflects the blended cost of every mile driven rather than just the fuel portion. That makes it directly comparable to reimbursement rates like the IRS standard mileage rate, which are also built to cover total ownership cost, not fuel alone.

What if I don't use rideshare or public transit at all?

Enter $0 for whichever transportation categories you don't use. They'll still appear in the comparison at a $0 monthly cost, and since $0 is always the lowest possible cost, an unused option will always be flagged as "cheapest" — so for a meaningful comparison, only fill in categories you'd actually consider switching to.
