Shopify Transaction Cost Calculator
Calculate per-order transaction costs across Shopify plan tiers.
About this calculator
The Shopify Transaction Cost Calculator breaks down what each order actually costs to process across Shopify's three plan tiers, combining a percentage-plus-flat-fee payment charge with the fixed monthly subscription cost to show a true per-order and monthly total. Average Order Value is by far the dominant driver of Per-Order Fee, since the percentage-based payment rate scales directly with it while the flat $0.30 per-transaction fee stays fixed regardless of order size — which means the fee as a percentage of order value shrinks on larger orders even though the dollar fee grows.
Monthly Orders has no effect on the Per-Order Fee itself in this model; it only scales that fixed per-order figure up into Monthly Transaction Fees and, combined with the flat Monthly Plan Cost, the overall Monthly Total Cost. This calculator prices Shopify Payments and third-party gateway surcharges as flat rates by plan tier and does not model card-not-present versus in-person rate differences, currency conversion fees, chargeback costs, or the negotiated rates larger merchants sometimes secure — treat it as a starting comparison across tiers rather than an exact invoice forecast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a higher Average Order Value lower my fee as a percentage?
Shopify Payments charges a percentage of the order value plus a flat $0.30 per transaction, and that flat portion matters proportionally more on a small order than a large one — a $0.30 flat fee is 3% of a $10 order but only 0.3% of a $100 order. So while the dollar amount of your Per-Order Fee grows with order value, the Fee as % of Order actually shrinks as Average Order Value rises, because the fixed component gets diluted across a bigger sale.
Does the number of monthly orders change my per-order fee?
No — Monthly Orders has no effect on Per-Order Fee or Fee as % of Order in this calculator, since both of those are computed purely from Average Order Value, the selected plan's rate, and whether Shopify Payments is used. Monthly Orders only multiplies that already-fixed per-order fee to produce Monthly Transaction Fees and, combined with the flat plan subscription, Monthly Total Cost and Annual Total Cost.
Why does using a third-party payment gateway add a surcharge?
Shopify charges an additional transaction fee, on top of whatever your outside payment processor charges you separately, whenever you route payments through a gateway other than Shopify Payments — the surcharge in this calculator ranges from 0.6% on the Advanced plan up to 2% on Basic. Using Shopify Payments instead avoids that extra surcharge entirely, which is why it's usually the cheaper choice unless you have a specific reason — like an existing merchant account — to use a third-party processor.
How do I decide which Shopify plan tier is worth the higher monthly cost?
Each higher plan tier lowers the payment-processing percentage rate — from 2.9% on Basic down to 2.7% on Shopify and 2.5% on Advanced — so the upgrade pays for itself once your transaction-fee savings from that lower rate exceed the jump in monthly subscription cost. Compare Monthly Total Cost across tiers at your actual Average Order Value and Monthly Orders rather than relying on the sticker price of the plan alone, since a high-volume store can save far more from the rate cut than it pays in extra subscription fees.
