This calculator sizes a commercial carpet tile job: how many tiles and boxes to order, how much adhesive to buy, and an estimated installed cost. Room Length and Room Width set Room Area, and Room Area alone drives Adhesive Needed (figured at one gallon per 50 square feet) and Estimated Cost (a flat $4.50-per-square-foot installed rate) -- neither output moves when Tile Size, Installation Pattern, or Base Waste Factor changes. Tiles Needed is built differently: it starts from how many tiles fit across the room's length and width at the chosen Tile Size, then layers on waste for the Installation Pattern -- Monolithic adds none, Quarter Turn adds roughly 2%, Ashlar/Brick adds roughly 5%, reflecting the extra cuts a directional pattern requires -- plus whatever Base Waste Factor is set for ordinary trim loss.

A smaller Tile Size means more individual units are needed to cover the same floor. Boxes Needed then divides Tiles Needed by how many tiles ship per box: 10 for 18-inch tile, 12 for 24-inch tile. Because Estimated Cost is priced per square foot rather than per tile, switching pattern or tile size changes how many tiles and boxes to buy without moving the cost estimate shown on screen.

How to Use This Calculator

  3. Choose the installation pattern — monolithic, quarter-turn, or ashlar/brick (each adds different waste).
  4. Set the Base Waste Factor percentage for ordinary cuts and fitting loss (typically 5%, up to 15% for cut-heavy layouts) -- this is already built into Tiles Needed and Boxes Needed, so there's no need to pad the box count further.

No -- Estimated Cost comes from Room Area at a flat rate per square foot, so it holds steady whether you pick Monolithic, Quarter Turn, or Ashlar/Brick, even though the pattern does change how many tiles and boxes the job actually requires.

Why does a smaller tile size mean I need more tiles?

Tiles Needed comes from how many tiles fit across the room's length and width at the chosen Tile Size, so an 18-inch tile covers less floor per unit than a 24-inch tile and therefore needs more individual pieces to cover the same square footage.
