How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Peak dog capacity, Space per dog (sq ft), and Separate small-dog area?.
  2. Set Surface type and Fence height (ft).
  3. Review Total park area (sq ft) and Total project cost ($) ($).
  4. Use Total park area (acres) and Large dog area (sq ft) to inform your decision.

How the result changes with Space per dog (sq ft)

What each input means

Peak dog capacity
Maximum dogs at peak use. Industry recommends 500-1,000 sq ft per dog.
Space per dog (sq ft)
Square feet per dog. 500 = dense urban, 750 = suburban, 1,000+ = rural.
Separate small-dog area?
1 = Yes (adds 35% more area), 0 = No. Recommended for safety.
Surface type
0 = Natural grass, 1 = Decomposed granite, 2 = Artificial turf (K9), 3 = Gravel.
Fence height (ft)
4 ft for small dogs, 6 ft standard, 8 ft for jumpers. Chain link recommended.

What each result means

Total park area (sq ft)
Combined area of all zones.
Total park area (acres)
Park size in acres.
Large dog area (sq ft)
Primary off-leash zone for dogs > 25 lbs.
Small dog area (sq ft)
Separate zone for dogs under 25 lbs (if included).
Fencing needed (linear ft)
Total perimeter fencing including internal dividers.
Water stations
Dog water fountains/bowls recommended.
Waste stations
Bag dispensers with trash cans.
Total project cost ($)
Fencing + surfacing + amenities (excludes land).
Annual maintenance ($)
Estimated annual upkeep cost.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Peak dog capacity = 25, Space per dog (sq ft) = 750, Separate small-dog area? = 1, Surface type = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total park area
    Total park area = largeAreaSqFt + smallAreaSqFt
    25313 = 25313
  3. Calculate Total project cost
    Total project cost
    60110 = $60,110
  4. Calculate Total park area
    Total park area
    0.58 = 0.58
  5. Calculate Large dog area
    Large dog area = peakDogCapacity * sqFtPerDog
    18750 = 18750
