About this calculator
Total Enclosure Perimeter (ft) sets Fence Panel Length (ft) only after subtracting every gate opening (Number of Gates x Gate Width (ft)) -- a perimeter with more or wider gates has proportionally less actual fence panel to buy, even though the enclosure itself is the same size. Fence Type changes two unrelated things at once: a cost-per-linear-foot rate for panels (from $18/ft removable mesh up to $85/ft glass panel) and a completely separate per-gate cost ($250 up to $1,200), so switching fence type moves both Fence Panels Cost ($) and Gates Cost ($) independently rather than one driving the other.
Fence Height (ft) is scoped narrowly on purpose: it only feeds Post Hole Depth (in) (embedment depth scales with height, plus a fixed frost-line allowance) and has zero effect on Fence Panel Length (ft), Total Posts, or either cost line -- a taller code-minimum-plus fence costs the same per linear foot as a code-minimum one in this calculator's pricing model, it just needs deeper-set posts. Post Spacing (ft) and Number of Corners both drive Total Posts, but through different terms: spacing sets how many LINE posts the straight runs need (tighter spacing means more posts), while corners add a fixed one post per direction change on top of that, independent of how long any individual run is.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does adding a second gate reduce the fence panel length even though the enclosure size didn't change?
Fence Panel Length (ft) is Total Enclosure Perimeter (ft) minus the combined width of every gate (Number of Gates x Gate Width (ft)) -- a gate opening isn't fence panel, so more gates or wider ones both shrink the panel footage this calculator prices even while the enclosure's total perimeter stays fixed. That's also why Fence Panels Cost ($) can drop when you add a gate, even as Gates Cost ($) and Total Cost ($) rise overall.
Local code requires 6 ft fencing at my property instead of the usual 4 ft minimum -- will that push the per-foot panel price up?
No -- in this calculator's pricing model, cost per linear foot is set entirely by Fence Type, not height. Fence Height (ft) only affects Post Hole Depth (in): taller fences need deeper-embedded posts (roughly a third of fence height, plus a fixed 6 in below-frost allowance), but the panels themselves price the same whether you choose the 4 ft code minimum or the 6 ft maximum this calculator allows.
Why does Post Hole Diameter (in) only change for glass panel fencing?
Glass panel fencing (Fence Type 4) needs a wider post footing than the other three fence types to support the heavier, more rigid panels -- 14 in versus a standard 10 in for mesh, aluminum, or wrought iron. It's the only input in this calculator where Fence Type changes a physical hole dimension rather than just a cost rate.
How do Post Spacing (ft) and Number of Corners each affect Total Posts?
Differently. Post Spacing (ft) determines how many line posts a straight run of fence needs -- tighter spacing (say 6 ft instead of 8 ft on center) means more line posts along the same length of panel. Number of Corners adds exactly one additional post per direction change, on top of the line-post count, regardless of how long the runs between those corners are. Gate posts are counted separately still, at a fixed two per gate.
