Workers Per Access4
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter scaffold length (ft), height (ft), number of lifts, and select access type (ladder or stairway).
- Enter number of workers.
- Review access points needed and whether a stairway tower is recommended by OSHA.
- Check tower frames needed and ladders required based on worker count and scaffold height.
- OSHA requires stairway access for scaffolds over 2 feet in height when frequent access is needed.
How the result changes with Scaffold length (ft)
| Scaffold length (ft) | Access points required |
|---|---|
| 201 | 5 |
| 701 | 15 |
| 1,300 | 26 |
| 1,800 | 36 |
What each input means
- Scaffold length (ft)
- Total horizontal run of the scaffold. Access must be within 50 ft of all workers.
- Scaffold height (ft)
- Total height of the scaffold from ground to top platform.
- Number of lifts
- Vertical tiers. Stairway towers are recommended above 4 lifts.
- Access Type
- Select scaffold access method
- Number of workers
- Workers using the scaffold, affects traffic per access point.
What each result means
- Access points required
- Number of ladder or stairway access points needed (one per 50 ft of scaffold).
- Stairway recommended (1=yes)
- 1 if scaffold is tall enough (>4 lifts) that stairway towers are recommended over ladders.
- Stairway tower frames
- Additional frames needed if using stairway tower access (0 if using ladders).
- Ladders needed
- Number of access ladders if using ladder access (0 if using stairway towers).
- Landing platforms
- Rest/landing platforms for stairway towers (one per lift per tower).
- Self-closing gates
- Number of self-closing access gate openings needed in guardrails.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersScaffold length (ft) = 100, Scaffold height (ft) = 30, Number of lifts = 4, Access Type = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
- Calculate Access points requiredAccess points required = max(1, ceil(scaffoldLength / 50))2 = 2
- Calculate Stairway recommended0 = 0
- Calculate Stairway tower framesStairway tower frames = towerFramesPerPoint * accessPointsNeeded0 = 0
