Tiles Needed is a straightforward area division: Room Length times Room Width gives the floor area in square feet, Tile Length times Tile Width (converted from inches) gives the area of a single tile, and dividing the first by the second — rounded up, since a partial tile still means buying a whole one — gives the raw tile count. Room Length and Room Width scale the result identically, since they're multiplied together the same way; a bigger tile has the opposite effect, shrinking Tiles Needed because more of the floor is covered per piece. Waste Percentage plays no role in Tiles Needed itself — it only enters the second output, Tiles to Buy, which multiplies the raw count by (1 + waste/100) and rounds up again. That two-step design means Tiles Needed always tells you the bare minimum for full floor coverage with zero cuts, while Tiles to Buy is the number to actually take to the store. The 10% default waste factor is a reasonable starting point for a simple rectangular room in a straight running-bond pattern; diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, rooms with lots of jogs or fixtures, or larger tile formats with fewer usable cut pieces all justify pushing waste higher, often to 15-20%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't Waste Percentage change the Tiles Needed number?

Tiles Needed is the raw area division — room area divided by tile area, rounded up — with no waste factor applied. Waste Percentage is added afterward to produce the separate Tiles to Buy figure, so you can see both the bare-minimum coverage number and the real shopping-list number side by side.

How much should I increase Waste Percentage for a diagonal layout?

10% is a reasonable default for a straight running-bond layout in a simple rectangular room, but diagonal patterns, herringbone layouts, and rooms with lots of jogs or fixture cutouts typically generate more scrap. Most installers push waste to 15-20% for those situations.

Does a larger tile size mean I need fewer tiles?

This calculator multiplies Room Length by Room Width to get area, so it assumes a rectangular footprint. For an L-shaped room or one with alcoves, calculate each rectangular section separately and add the areas together before dividing by tile size, or increase Waste Percentage to account for the extra cuts an irregular shape requires.
