Spine width (inches)0.43
Sheets per book100
Text block thickness (mm)10
Swell allowance (mm)1
Total sheets (all copies)100
Binding Method NamePerfect Binding
How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the total page count of the book (both sides of each sheet counted).
  2. Enter the paper weight in GSM — 80 GSM for standard office paper, 100 GSM for book paper.
  3. Select the binding method: perfect binding, sewn kettle stitch, Coptic, Japanese stab, or staple/pamphlet.
  4. Enter the number of copies to calculate total sheets for a print run.
  5. Read the spine width in mm and inches — use this measurement when designing the cover layout.
  6. Note the text block thickness and swell allowance to understand how your binding method affects the spine.

How the result changes with Page count

Page countSpine width (mm)
50226.1
1,75188.6
3,251163.6
4,500226

What each input means

Page count
Total number of pages in the book (both sides of each sheet counted).
Paper weight (GSM)
Paper weight in grams per square meter. Common: 80 (office), 100 (book), 120 (premium), 150+ (art).
Binding method
1 = Perfect binding, 2 = Sewn (kettle stitch), 3 = Coptic, 4 = Japanese stab, 5 = Staple/pamphlet.
Number of copies
How many copies to calculate total sheets for.

What each result means

Spine width (mm)
Total spine width including text block and binding swell.
Spine width (inches)
Spine width converted to inches.
Sheets per book
Number of paper sheets needed per copy.
Text block thickness (mm)
Thickness of paper stack alone, before swell.
Swell allowance (mm)
Additional thickness from thread, glue, or staples.
Total sheets (all copies)
Total paper sheets for the entire print run.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Page count = 200, Paper weight (GSM) = 80, Binding method = 1, Number of copies = 1 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Spine width
    Spine width = textBlockMm + swellMm
    11 = 11
  3. Calculate Spine width
    Spine width = spineWidthMm / 25.4
    0.433 = 0.433
  4. Calculate Sheets per book
    Sheets per book
    100 = 100
