Coin Collection Insurance Calculator

Calculate insurance premiums for your coin collection based on value, storage security, and coverage needs.

About this calculator

This calculator starts from a base industry rate of $2.50 per $100 of collection value per year -- squarely in the $1.50-$3.50 range that specialty collectibles insurers like Collectibles Insurance Services or Hugh Wood typically quote -- and then layers on five independent multipliers that each reflect a real underwriting factor. Storage type swings the rate from a 20% surcharge for coins kept at home with no safe up to a 40% discount for a professional vault, with a home safe (10% discount) and bank safe deposit box (25% discount) in between. Security level (none, basic alarm, or advanced alarm-plus-camera-plus-monitoring) adds a further discount up to 15%. Larger collections get modest volume discounts -- up to 20% off for collections over $500,000 -- while a concentration-risk check flags collections where one item makes up more than 25% (5% surcharge) or 50% (15% surcharge) of total value, since a single catastrophic loss is a bigger underwriting concern than value spread across many modest pieces.

Your chosen deductible percentage also discounts the rate, at roughly 4% off per 1% of deductible. All of these multiply together into an effective rate applied to your total value to produce the annual premium, and the tool separately suggests insuring at 115% of current value to leave headroom for market appreciation between valuations. These are planning-stage estimates only -- actual premiums require a real insurer quote, and any single coin above a modest threshold should be individually scheduled with its own appraisal to guarantee full replacement value rather than relying on a blanket policy figure.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Collection value ($) = 10000, Number of coins = 50, Highest single item ($) = 500, Storage type (0-3) = 1 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Annual premium
    Annual premium = (totalCollectionValue / 100) * effectiveRate
    205.2 = $205.2
  3. Calculate Monthly premium
    Monthly premium = annualPremium / 12
    17.1 = $17.1
  4. Calculate Recommended coverage
    Recommended coverage = totalCollectionValue * 1.15
    11500 = $11,500

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does storing coins in a bank safe deposit box cost more in premium than a home safe, but less than a professional vault?

The calculator scales the base rate by a storage multiplier that reflects relative theft and loss risk: a 20% surcharge for no safe at home, a 10% discount for a home safe, a 25% discount for a bank safe deposit box, and a 40% discount for a professional vault -- each step down in accessibility and up in physical security lowers the assumed risk and therefore the premium.

What triggers the concentration-risk surcharge, and why does it exist?

If your highest single item's value exceeds 25% of your total collection value, the calculator applies a 5% rate surcharge, rising to 15% if it exceeds 50%. This models the fact that a collection dominated by one or two very valuable pieces carries more single-event loss risk than the same total value spread across many modest coins.

How much does raising my deductible actually lower my premium?

Each 1 percentage point of deductible, as a share of collection value, reduces the effective rate by about 4%, so moving from a 1% to a 5% deductible cuts roughly 16 percentage points off your effective rate multiplier -- though it also means you'd absorb a larger dollar loss before coverage kicks in on any claim.

Why does the calculator recommend insuring at 115% of my collection's current value rather than exactly 100%?

That buffer is meant to cover value appreciation between valuations -- numismatic values can rise meaningfully in the time between when you last appraised your collection and when you'd actually file a claim, so insuring slightly above current value helps avoid being underinsured at the point of loss.
