About this calculator
Enter Finished Gathered Length -- the length you want the fabric to measure once it's gathered down, such as a ruffle strip that must finish at 16 inches to match the edge it attaches to -- and Fullness Ratio, the multiplier that sets how much extra fabric goes into the gathers (1.5x for a light ruffle, 2x for moderate fullness, up to 2.5-3x for a full, densely gathered ruffle). Fabric (no seams) multiplies Finished Gathered Length by Fullness Ratio to get the raw fabric length before any seam allowance is added, and Extra for Gathering reports just the difference between that raw length and Finished Gathered Length -- the actual excess fabric that becomes the gathers themselves once stitched down. Because Extra for Gathering subtracts a flat Finished Gathered Length rather than scaling the whole way Fabric (no seams) does, it does NOT grow by the same multiple as Fullness Ratio -- at the default 24-inch length, moving from 1.5x to 3x doubles Fabric (no seams) from 36 to 72 inches, but Extra for Gathering quadruples, from 12 to 48 inches, since the fixed 24-inch length is subtracted out both times.
Seam Allowances then adds a flat amount on top, covering the two ends where the gathered strip joins the seam it's being attached to, so Cut Fabric Length is simply Fabric (no seams) plus Seam Allowances, reported in both inches and Fabric in Yards for cutting layouts. Gathering Thread estimates the length of basting thread needed for two parallel rows of gathering stitches: each row of straight stitching consumes roughly 2.5 times its own length in combined needle and bobbin thread (the same thread-to-seam ratio this site's Thread Consumption calculator uses for a straight/lockstitch), so Gathering Thread is Cut Fabric Length multiplied by 2 rows and by that 2.5x ratio, converted to yards.

How much does raising Fullness Ratio actually add to the cut fabric length?
Fullness Ratio multiplies Finished Gathered Length before anything else happens, so at the default 24-inch length, moving from a 1.5x ratio to a 3x ratio doubles Fabric (no seams) from 36 inches to 72 inches -- Seam Allowances stays a flat addition on top either way. Extra for Gathering does NOT grow by that same multiple, though: it is Fabric (no seams) minus the fixed 24-inch Finished Gathered Length, so it actually quadruples over the same range, from 12 inches to 48 inches, since subtracting a constant breaks the simple doubling that Fabric (no seams) itself follows.
Does Seam Allowances affect how much fabric goes into the actual gathers?
No. Extra for Gathering is Fabric (no seams) minus Finished Gathered Length, and neither of those two terms includes Seam Allowances at all -- it only affects Cut Fabric Length and Fabric in Yards, the total you cut. Raising or lowering Seam Allowances shifts how much fabric you allocate for joining seams, not how full the gathered section itself ends up looking.
Why does Gathering Thread use more than twice the Cut Fabric Length?
Gathering by machine basting or hand-running stitches is almost always done with two parallel rows rather than one, because a single row of basting thread tends to twist and pucker unevenly when pulled up, while two rows spread the tension and let you adjust the gathers smoothly before the final seam. On top of that doubling, each row of straight/lockstitch sewing consumes roughly 2.5 times its own seam length in combined needle and bobbin thread rather than a 1:1 length -- the same ratio this site's Thread Consumption calculator applies to straight stitching -- so the total multiplier on Cut Fabric Length is 2 rows times 2.5x, not just 2x.
What Fullness Ratio should I use for a ruffle versus a gently gathered waistband?
Light gathering, such as easing a sleeve cap or a subtly gathered waistband, typically uses around 1.5x fullness; moderate ruffles common on skirts and cuffs sit around 2x; and a full, densely gathered ruffle -- the kind you'd see on a bustled skirt hem or a decorative flounce -- calls for 2.5x to 3x. Heavier or stiffer fabrics generally need less fullness than lightweight, drapey fabrics to read as equally full once gathered.
