How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the twist per inch (TPI) of your singles yarn — count twists in a 1-inch section.
  2. Set the number of plies you are combining.
  3. Enter the WPI (wraps per inch) of the singles yarn.
  4. Enter the desired finished yards of plied yarn and the twist take-up percentage (typically 5–15%).
  5. Read the recommended plying TPI for a balanced yarn and the total singles yardage needed across all plies.
  6. Use the singles yards per ply output to prepare equal-length bobbins before starting to ply.

Plied yarn WPI
Expected wraps per inch of the finished plied yarn.
Total singles needed (yd)
Total singles yardage needed across all plies including take-up.
Singles per ply (yd)
Singles yardage needed for each individual ply.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Singles TPI = 8, Number of plies = 2, Singles WPI = 20, Desired finished yards = 200 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Plying TPI
    Plying TPI = singlesTpi / sqrt(plies)
    5.66 = 5.66
  3. Calculate Plied yarn WPI
    Plied yarn WPI = singlesWpi / sqrt(plies)
    14.1 = 14.1
  4. Calculate Total singles needed
    Total singles needed = singlesYardsPerPly * plies
    444 = 444
