How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the twist per inch (TPI) of your singles yarn — count twists in a 1-inch section.
- Set the number of plies you are combining.
- Enter the WPI (wraps per inch) of the singles yarn.
- Enter the desired finished yards of plied yarn and the twist take-up percentage (typically 5–15%).
- Read the recommended plying TPI for a balanced yarn and the total singles yardage needed across all plies.
- Use the singles yards per ply output to prepare equal-length bobbins before starting to ply.

Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersSingles TPI = 8, Number of plies = 2, Singles WPI = 20, Desired finished yards = 200 = 5 input(s) provided
- Calculate Plying TPIPlying TPI = singlesTpi / sqrt(plies)5.66 = 5.66
- Calculate Plied yarn WPIPlied yarn WPI = singlesWpi / sqrt(plies)14.1 = 14.1
- Calculate Total singles neededTotal singles needed = singlesYardsPerPly * plies444 = 444
