The princess seam splits a bodice into a center-front panel and a side panel, curving through the bust to shape fit without a separate bust dart. This calculator anchors the seam at Bust Point from CF -- the distance from center front to the bust apex -- because Seam Placement from CF and Front Panel (bust) both equal that measurement directly: Bust Circumference, Waist Circumference, and Bust Point Height never move where the seam sits at the bust line. Side Panel (bust) is the leftover width: half of Bust Circumference minus the front panel, so a fuller bust measurement widens the side panel while moving the seam placement further from center narrows it.

Moving from bust down to waist, the pattern splits the difference between half-bust and half-waist across both panels -- roughly 40% comes off the front panel, 60% off the side panel -- which is why Front Panel (waist) and Side Panel (waist) both shrink as Waist Circumference tightens relative to Bust Circumference. Seam Length is estimated from Bust Point Height alone, plus a fixed allowance for the drop from bust point to waist, independent of every circumference measurement. Front Cut Width and Side Cut Width simply add Seam Allowance to both edges of the corresponding finished panel width, so a wider seam allowance affects only the cutting dimensions -- never the finished, sewn panel widths at bust or waist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing Bust Circumference move where the princess seam sits on the bust?

No. Seam Placement from CF and Front Panel (bust) are both set directly by Bust Point from CF -- Bust Circumference never enters that calculation. Bust Circumference only changes Side Panel (bust), the leftover width left over once the front panel is subtracted from half the bust measurement.

Why do the waist panels shrink when I tighten Waist Circumference?

The waist shaping splits the difference between half your bust and half your waist across both panels, roughly 40% off the front panel and 60% off the side panel. A smaller Waist Circumference relative to Bust Circumference increases that difference, so both Front Panel (waist) and Side Panel (waist) come out narrower.

Does Seam Allowance change the finished panel width?

No -- Seam Allowance only affects Front Cut Width and Side Cut Width, which add allowance to both edges of the already-computed Front Panel (bust) and Side Panel (bust) figures for cutting. The finished, sewn panel widths at bust and waist are unaffected by how much seam allowance you choose.
