How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the tapestry design width and height in inches.
  2. Set the warp EPI — tapestry typically uses 6–12 ends per inch.
  3. Set the weft PPI — higher values (20–40) give finer detail.
  4. Enter the number of weft colors in your design.
  5. Enter the loom waste in inches (unweavable warp at front and back, typically 18–24 in).
  6. Read the total weft yardage, average yarn per color, and warp yardage needed — purchase at least 10% extra for each color.

How the result changes with Tapestry width (inches)

Tapestry width (inches)Total weft yarn (yards)
13195
43645
781,170
1081,620

What each input means

Tapestry width (inches)
Width of the tapestry design.
Tapestry height (inches)
Height of the tapestry design (weaving direction).
Warp EPI
Warp ends per inch. Tapestry typically uses 6-12 EPI.
Weft PPI
Weft picks per inch. Higher = finer detail. Fine tapestry: 20-40 PPI.
Number of colors
Number of different weft colors in the design.
Loom waste (inches)
Unweavable warp at loom front and back.

What each result means

Total weft yarn (yards)
Total weft yardage for the entire tapestry.
Average per color (yards)
Average yarn per color assuming equal coverage.
Warp yarn (yards)
Warp yarn needed (usually cotton seine twine).
Total warp ends
Number of warp threads to set up.
Total weft picks
Total number of weft rows to weave.
Estimated hours
Approximate weaving time based on area and detail level.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Tapestry width (inches) = 12, Tapestry height (inches) = 18, Warp EPI = 8, Weft PPI = 20 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total weft yarn
    Total weft yarn = (totalPicks * weftPerPick) / 36
    180 = 180
  3. Calculate Average per color
    Average per color = totalWeftYards / numColors
    36 = 36
  4. Calculate Warp yarn
    Warp yarn = (totalWarpEnds * warpLengthInches) / 36
    112 = 112
