How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the number of towels to weave on a single warp.
  2. Set the desired finished length and width of each towel in inches after washing.
  3. Enter the EPI and PPI for your chosen cotton yarn (12–20 EPI is typical for towels).
  4. Set the hem allowance per towel end, shrinkage, take-up, and loom waste in inches.
  5. Read the total warp and weft yardage needed to purchase the correct amount of yarn.
  6. Use the total warp length to wind the correct amount on the beam before threading.

What each input means

Number of towels
How many towels to weave on a single warp.
Finished towel length (in)
Desired finished length of each towel after washing.
Finished towel width (in)
Desired finished width of each towel after washing.
EPI
Ends per inch. Cotton towels: 12-20 EPI depending on yarn.
PPI
Picks per inch. Usually close to EPI for balanced weave.
Hem allowance (in)
Extra length per towel end for turning hems.
Shrinkage %
Cotton towels typically shrink 5-10% after washing.
Take-up %
Warp shortening from weft interlacement.
Loom waste (inches)
Unweavable warp at front and back of loom.

What each result means

Total warp length (inches)
Total length to wind on the warp beam.
Total warp ends
Number of warp threads across the width.
Warp yarn (yards)
Total warp yardage needed.
Weft yarn (yards)
Total weft yardage needed.
Total yarn (yards)
Combined warp and weft yardage.
Estimated weight (oz)
Approximate total yarn weight assuming 8/2 cotton.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Number of towels = 4, Finished towel length (in) = 28, Finished towel width (in) = 18, EPI = 15 = 9 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Warp yarn
    Warp yarn = (totalEnds * totalWarpLength) / 36
    1487 = 1487
  3. Calculate Weft yarn
    Weft yarn = (totalPicks * weftPerPick) / 36
    1397 = 1397
  4. Calculate Total warp length
    Total warp length = weavingLength + loomWaste
    182.8 = 182.8
  5. Calculate Total warp ends
    Total warp ends = round(widthOnLoom * epi)
    293 = 293
