Art Material Cost Calculator
Per-painting material cost from medium and canvas size.
About this calculator
Material cost for a painting is more than "tubes times price," because how far a tube of paint goes depends on the medium, and every canvas needs a primed surface before the first color layer goes on. This calculator starts from Canvas Area (Canvas Width times Canvas Height, converted to square feet), then estimates Gesso Cost from a standard two-coat primer at roughly 75 square feet of coverage per quart. Paint Cost comes from the total painted surface — Canvas Area times Number of Layers — split across Number of Colors, then converted to whole tubes using a coverage rate that depends on Medium: oil paint covers about 6 square feet per tube in a thin coat, acrylic about 8, and watercolor about 12, because thinner, more dilutable mediums stretch further per tube.
Medium also sets the Mediums & Solvents cost, added as a percentage of Paint Cost — about 15% for oil (turpentine, linseed oil, mediums), 5% for acrylic (mostly water plus a retarder), and 3% for watercolor. Total Material Cost sums Canvas/Support Cost, Gesso Cost, Paint Cost, and Mediums & Solvents, and Cost per Sq Ft divides that total by Canvas Area so you can compare pricing across different canvas sizes on a like-for-like basis. What this calculator does not account for: brush wear, palette knife or other tool costs, framing, varnish, studio overhead, or paint wasted to mixing errors and dried-out palettes — real material cost on any given painting will run somewhat higher than this estimate, which covers only the core paint-primer-support materials.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Canvas Width, Canvas Height, and select the painting Medium (Oil, Acrylic, or Watercolor).
- Set Number of Layers, Cost per Tube, and Canvas/Support Cost.
- Adjust Number of Colors as needed.
- Review the Total Material Cost ($) result.
- Use Canvas Area (sq ft) and Tubes of Paint Needed to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Number of Colors
| Number of Colors | Total Material Cost |
|---|---|
| 4 | $32.27 |
| 6 | $32.27 |
| 12 | $32.27 |
| 20 | $43.31 |

How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters7 parametersCanvas Width = 16, Canvas Height = 20, Medium = 0, Number of Layers = 3, Cost per Tube = 12, Canvas/Support Cost = 15, Number of Colors = 8 = 7 input(s) provided
- Calculate Total Material CostTotal Material Cost = canvasCost + gessoCost + paintCost + solventCost37.79 = $37.79
- Calculate Canvas AreaCanvas Area = (width * height) / 1442.22 = 2.22
- Calculate Tubes of Paint NeededTubes of Paint Needed = tubesPerColor * numColors1.6 = 1.6

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does switching Medium change the cost even if I keep every other input the same?
Because Medium changes two things in the formula at once: the paint coverage rate per tube (oil ~6 sq ft, acrylic ~8 sq ft, watercolor ~12 sq ft in a thin coat) and the Mediums & Solvents percentage added on top of Paint Cost (about 15% for oil, 5% for acrylic, 3% for watercolor). Oil paint therefore needs relatively more tubes to cover the same area and carries a larger solvent surcharge, so switching from watercolor to oil on an identical canvas raises Total Material Cost even though every dimension, layer count, and color count is unchanged.
Does Gesso Cost depend on how many layers of paint I plan to apply?
No. Gesso Cost is calculated from Canvas Area alone, using a fixed two-coat primer assumption at roughly 75 square feet of coverage per quart — it represents priming the surface once before painting begins, not a per-paint-layer cost. Number of Layers instead scales Paint Cost, because more paint layers mean more total painted surface area (Canvas Area times Number of Layers) even though the underlying canvas size and the gesso needed to prime it stay the same.
If I double Canvas Width and Canvas Height, does Total Material Cost also double?
No — it roughly quadruples for the paint- and gesso-related portions, because Canvas Area is Width times Height, so doubling both dimensions multiplies area by four. Gesso Cost and Paint Cost scale directly with area, so both roughly quadruple. Canvas/Support Cost, however, is entered directly rather than derived from dimensions, so it does not automatically scale with size — you need to update it yourself to reflect a larger, more expensive support.
What does Cost per Sq Ft actually measure?
Total Material Cost divided by Canvas Area, giving a size-normalized figure you can use to compare pricing across canvases of different dimensions — useful when deciding whether a larger commission is proportionally cheaper or more expensive per square foot to produce than a smaller one. Because Canvas/Support Cost and Gesso Cost don't scale linearly in the same way as Paint Cost across every size range, Cost per Sq Ft is not perfectly constant even for the same Medium and layer count — larger canvases typically show a somewhat lower per-square-foot cost as the fixed canvas cost is spread over more area.
