Calligraphy Nib Width Calculator

Broad-edge calligraphy hands are traditionally designed in nib-width units so the same proportions scale to any pen size — a 5-nib-width Italic x-height looks correct whether you're writing with a 1mm nib or a 5mm nib. Entering nib width and ratio separately lets the calculator convert to millimeters for your specific pen, while keeping the underlying proportions locked to the calligraphic tradition you're practicing.

It's the ratio of your thickest stroke (the full nib width, produced when the pen moves perpendicular to its edge) to your thinnest stroke (nib width times the cosine of your pen angle, produced when the pen moves along the direction of its edge). A higher ratio means a more dramatic thick-to-thin swing in your letterforms — a 45° pen angle gives roughly a 1.4:1 contrast, while angles closer to 0° or 90° push the thin strokes toward zero width and the contrast ratio toward infinity.

The calculator adds two extra nib widths of interline space on top of the full body height (x-height plus ascender plus descender), which is a standard calligraphic convention for keeping ascenders and descenders from crowding adjacent lines. If your hand uses unusually tall ascenders or descenders, you may want more air than the default two nib widths allow — the ratio sliders let you model that.

No — the defaults (5 nib widths for x-height, 3 for ascenders, 3 for descenders) approximate an Italic hand, but other hands use different proportions: Foundational typically uses about 4.5 nib widths for x-height, Uncial around 4, and Gothic/Textura is often narrower still. Adjust the sliders to match the specific historical or modern hand you're practicing rather than relying on the Italic-leaning defaults for every style.
