Clay Volume Calculator
Estimate clay weight and volume needed for a sculpture based on dimensions, clay type, and construction method.
Inputs
Results
Clay needed (lbs)
42.3
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the sculpture's bounding box dimensions: height, width, and depth in inches.
- Select clay type (water-based, oil-based/plasteline, polymer, or air-dry).
- Set construction method (solid, hollow, or armature-supported) to adjust fill factor.
- Review clay weight in lbs and kg, clay volume in cubic inches, and number of 25-lb bags.
- Order 10-15% extra clay to account for waste, armature voids, and surface reworking.
How the result changes with Sculpture height (in)
| Sculpture height (in) | Clay needed (lbs) |
|---|---|
| 13 | 30.5 |
| 43 | 101 |
| 78 | 183.2 |
| 108 | 253.7 |
What each input means
- Sculpture height (in)
- Overall height of the finished sculpture in inches.
- Sculpture width (in)
- Maximum width of the sculpture.
- Sculpture depth (in)
- Maximum depth (front to back).
- Clay type
- 0 = earthenware, 1 = stoneware, 2 = porcelain, 3 = oil-based (Chavant/Roma).
- Construction
- 0 = solid (for small pieces or maquettes), 1 = hollow (coil/slab built for firing).
- Wall thickness (in)
- Wall thickness for hollow construction. Ignored for solid pieces.
What each result means
- Clay needed (lbs)
- Total clay weight including 12% waste allowance.
- Clay needed (kg)
- Clay weight in kilograms.
- Clay volume (in³)
- Volume of clay in the sculpture.
- 25-lb bags needed
- Number of standard 25-lb bags to purchase.
- 50-lb bags needed
- Number of 50-lb bags to purchase.
- Estimated clay cost
- Approximate cost based on clay type.
- Shrinkage (%)
- Total volumetric shrinkage from wet to fired.
- Fired height (in)
- Expected height after firing (accounting for shrinkage).
- Fired width (in)
- Expected width after firing.
- Sculpture volume (in³)
- Estimated total sculpture volume (before hollowing).
