ISBN Cost Calculator
Calculate ISBN pricing for single or bulk purchases.
About this calculator
In the US, ISBNs are sold exclusively through Bowker (MyIdentifiers.com), the country's official ISBN registration agency, and they're priced in discrete blocks rather than per unit -- a single ISBN costs $125, but a block of 10 costs $295 ($29.50 each), a block of 100 costs $575 ($5.75 each), and a block of 1,000 costs $1,500 ($1.50 each), per Bowker's own published pricing. Because every format of a book -- paperback, hardcover, ebook, audiobook -- needs its own separate ISBN, the real number of ISBNs a project needs is titles multiplied by formats per title, not just the title count alone. This calculator takes that total and finds the lowest-cost combination of purchase blocks that covers it (which is not always simply "round up to the next block size" -- see the FAQ below), then reports both the cost per ISBN inside that block (what you paid on average for every ISBN in the batch you bought, used or not) and the cost per ISBN actually used (what each ISBN you're really putting on a book cost you).
Those two numbers diverge sharply for a small project bought from a bigger block: a self-publisher needing exactly 3 ISBNs is automatically stepped up to the $295 block of 10, so the cost per ISBN used comes out to $98.33 (the $295 spread only across the 3 ISBNs actually assigned to books), while the cost per ISBN in the block is a much lower $29.50 (the same $295 spread across all 10), leaving 7 unused ISBNs banked for future titles rather than wasted. Beyond 1,000 ISBNs the calculator scales in additional 1,000-blocks at the same per-block rate, since Bowker's published catalog stops at that tier and larger bulk-purchase discounts (10,000+) require a direct quote this tool cannot look up.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Number of Titles and Formats per Title.
- Review the Block Cost ($) result.
- Use Cost per ISBN Used ($) and Cost per ISBN in Block ($) to inform your decision.
- Check ISBNs Needed to see the true total (titles x formats), and Unused ISBNs for how many are banked for future titles.
What each input means
- Number of Titles
- Number of book titles needing ISBNs.
- Formats per Title
- Formats per title (e.g., paperback + ebook + audiobook = 3).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a 3-title project with 3 formats each need 9 ISBNs, not 3?
Bowker -- the sole official U.S. ISBN registration agency, and every ISBN agency elsewhere -- requires a distinct ISBN for every separately sold edition of a work, and different formats -- paperback, hardcover, ebook, audiobook -- count as separate editions even though they're the "same book" to a reader. This calculator multiplies Number of Titles by Formats per Title to get the real ISBN count needed, so 3 titles each released in 3 formats requires 9 ISBNs total, which is why the Formats per Title field exists separately from the title count.
Is it ever cheaper to buy exactly the ISBNs I need instead of a block?
Usually not, but there is one real exception: for a shortfall of just 1 or 2 ISBNs, buying that many singles at $125 each is actually cheaper than stepping up to the $295 block of 10 (2 singles cost $250 total versus $295 for the block). This calculator accounts for that by computing the lowest-cost combination for your exact need rather than always rounding up to the next block size -- for example, at 11 ISBNs needed, a 10-block plus 1 single ($420) beats jumping straight to a 100-block ($575). Once the shortfall grows past a couple of ISBNs, though, Bowker's tiered pricing does make a bigger block (or a block-plus-singles combination) the cheaper choice, since every larger block has a lower cost per ISBN than the tier below it.
What happens to the cost if I need more than 1,000 ISBNs?
This calculator scales by buying however many additional 1,000-blocks are needed at $1,500 per block -- for example, 2,500 ISBNs needed would require three 1,000-blocks ($4,500 total) rather than one. Bowker also offers larger bulk programs (10,000, 100,000, or more) at better per-unit rates for high-volume publishers, but those tiers are quote-only and not part of the published block pricing this calculator uses.
Do the unused ISBNs from a block expire or go to waste?
ISBNs purchased from Bowker do not expire, so any unused ISBNs left over in a block -- the difference between the block size and what you actually assign to titles -- remain available for future books indefinitely. That's a meaningful part of the value case for buying a bigger block than you strictly need today: the "wasted" capacity this calculator reports as Unused ISBNs is really banked inventory for your next project, not a sunk cost.
