Spawn Rate Calculator

Calculate entity spawn timing and steady-state population.

About this calculator

This calculator models a simple steady-state spawn system: it assumes the spawner perfectly replaces whatever players kill, so Spawns / Minute is set directly equal to Kills per Minute rather than being derived from Respawn Delay. That single assumption drives most of the output -- Spawn Interval is just 60 divided by the kill rate, and Kills per Minute is the input that moves both figures the most. Steady-State Count estimates how many entities are typically alive at once by subtracting the entities "in respawn" (kills per minute times respawn delay, converted to a fraction of a minute) from Max Entities, floored at zero so it never reports a negative population. Clear Time answers a different question -- how long it would take to wipe out every entity with no respawning at all -- and is independent of Respawn Delay entirely.

Variety Index is a rough diversity estimate (spawn pool size relative to max entities), not a true probability distribution; it assumes uniform random selection from the pool, which real spawn tables rarely use once weighting or cooldowns are involved. What this calculator does not model: burst spawning, spawn caps that lag behind kills, or any cooldown on individual entity types. Respawn Delay only affects Steady-State Count, not the spawn rate or interval figures -- a detail that surprises many designers tuning encounters for the first time. At Kills per Minute = 0, both Spawn Interval and Clear Time report "Never" rather than a number: with nothing being killed, the spawner never needs to replace anything and the arena is never cleared, so a numeric answer (like 0 seconds) would misleadingly read as "instant" instead of the honest "this never happens."

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Max Entities alive at once and the Respawn Delay in seconds.
  2. Enter Kills Per Minute as the average player kill rate for the encounter.
  3. Enter Spawn Pool Variety (number of different entity types) for diversity calculations.
  4. Review Spawn Interval, Spawns Per Minute, and Steady-State Entity Count.
  5. Check Clear Time (without respawns) and Variety Index to tune encounter pacing.

What each input means

Max Entities
Maximum number of entities alive at once.
Respawn Delay
Time before a killed entity respawns.
Kills per Minute
Average rate players kill entities.
Spawn Pool Variety
Number of different entity types that can spawn.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Max Entities = 20, Respawn Delay = 5, Kills per Minute = 10, Spawn Pool Variety = 8 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Spawn Interval
    Spawn Interval
    6 = 6
  3. Calculate Spawns / Minute
    Spawns / Minute
    10 = 10
  4. Calculate Steady-State Count
    Steady-State Count
    19 = 19

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't changing Respawn Delay affect Spawns / Minute?

Because this calculator assumes a steady-state spawner that always replaces exactly what's been killed -- Spawns / Minute is set equal to Kills per Minute directly, not derived from how long each individual respawn takes. Respawn Delay only shows up in the Steady-State Count figure, where a longer delay means more entities are "in the queue" at any given moment and the live population runs lower.

What does the Variety Index actually measure?

It's the ratio of your Spawn Pool Variety to Max Entities, capped at 100%, assuming each spawn picks uniformly at random from the pool. It's a rough diversity estimate, not a guaranteed distribution -- if your actual spawn logic weights certain entity types more heavily or uses cooldowns between repeats, the real variety a player experiences will differ from this index.

Is Clear Time a realistic combat estimate?

Only in the narrow sense of "how long to kill every currently-alive entity with no respawning," which is Max Entities divided by your kill rate. It ignores that entities keep respawning in a live encounter, so treat it as a diagnostic number for tuning rather than a prediction of how long a real fight against a live spawner will last. At Kills per Minute = 0, Clear Time reads "Never" -- with no kills happening, the arena is genuinely never cleared, not cleared instantly.

How should I use Steady-State Count when tuning an encounter?

Steady-State Count estimates the typical live population once kills and respawns reach equilibrium -- useful for checking whether an encounter will feel sparse or crowded at your target kill rate. If it comes back at or near zero, either Max Entities is too low or Respawn Delay is too long relative to how fast players are expected to clear entities.
