Word Count to Pages Calculator
Convert word count to pages by format, font size, and spacing.
About this calculator
There's no single "words per page" -- it depends on font size, line spacing, and the formatting convention you're targeting, and this calculator lets you set all three before converting Word Count into Estimated Pages. Format sets the baseline: Standard Manuscript assumes the classic submission convention of 12pt double-spaced text, working out to roughly 250 words per page; Trade Novel assumes the tighter, smaller-margin spacing typical of a printed trade paperback at around 275 words per page; and Academic Paper assumes double-spaced 12pt with the narrower margins common in academic formatting guides, closer to 300 words per page. Font Size and Line Spacing then scale that baseline up or down -- increasing either one spreads the same word count across more pages, since fewer words fit on each page, while a smaller font or tighter spacing packs more words per page and shrinks the page count for the same manuscript.
Words per Page reports the resulting figure after those adjustments, and Estimated Pages divides your Word Count by it. Estimated Chapters is a separate, rougher estimate based purely on word count -- about 3,000 words per chapter, a common average for commercial fiction -- and does not change with Format, Font Size, or Line Spacing, since chapter breaks are a structural choice by the author, not a formatting side effect. Length Category classifies your manuscript by word count alone, using the conventional publishing-industry bands: under 7,500 words is a short story, 7,500 to 40,000 a novella, 40,000 to 100,000 a novel, and above 100,000 an epic-length work -- useful context when deciding whether your project fits a target word-count range for its genre or format.

What each input means
- Word Count
- Total word count of your manuscript.
- Font Size
- Font size in points.
- Line Spacing
- Line spacing (1 = single, 1.5, 2 = double).
- Format
- Standard manuscript format assumes 12pt double-spaced (~250 words/page); trade novel assumes 11pt with tighter trade-paperback spacing (~275 words/page); academic assumes 12pt double-spaced with smaller margins (~300 words/page).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a larger Font Size increase Estimated Pages?
A larger font takes up more physical space per character, so fewer words fit on each page -- Words per Page drops, and the same total Word Count has to spread across more pages to fit. This calculator's baseline word-per-page figures assume the reference font sizes for each format (12pt for manuscript and academic, 11pt for trade novel), and scale up or down proportionally from there.
Does switching Format change Estimated Chapters?
No -- Estimated Chapters is calculated purely from Word Count, using roughly 3,000 words per chapter as a rough industry average for commercial fiction. Format, Font Size, and Line Spacing all affect how many pages that word count fills, but none of them changes how many words make up a chapter, so Estimated Chapters stays the same across every format setting.
Why does Trade Novel use a smaller reference font size than the other formats?
Trade Novel format models a typeset trade paperback rather than a manuscript submission -- published fiction commonly runs smaller, around 10-11pt, with tighter line spacing than the double-spaced 12pt convention used for manuscript submissions or academic papers, which is why its baseline words-per-page figure (about 275) starts from an 11pt reference instead of 12pt.
What word counts fall into each Length Category?
Under 7,500 words is a Short Story, 7,500 to 40,000 is a Novella, 40,000 to 100,000 is a Novel, and above 100,000 is an Epic. These are the conventional publishing- industry bands used for query letters and submission guidelines, though individual genres vary -- a literary novel and an epic fantasy novel target very different word counts even within the same "Novel" band.
