GRE Score Percentile Calculator
Find your GRE percentile ranking for verbal, quant, and analytical writing sections.
About this calculator
This calculator gives a quick, simplified ESTIMATE of where a GRE score falls relative to other test-takers -- it is not a lookup against ETS's official percentile tables, which are published separately for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, are updated periodically as the test-taker pool shifts, and follow a non-linear curve rather than a straight line. This tool instead applies a simple linear approximation across each section's 130-170 scale, useful for a rough sense of standing without needing to look up the current official table. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are scored completely independently of each other here: raising your Verbal Reasoning score moves only Verbal Percentile and has zero effect on Quant Percentile, and the same independence holds in reverse. Combined Score simply adds Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning together -- note that ETS itself does not publish an official percentile for that combined figure, since admissions committees are generally advised to weigh the two section scores separately rather than as a single blended number, so treat Combined Percentile here as an illustrative estimate only.
Analytical Writing Percentile is estimated separately from its own 0-6 score and never affects the Verbal or Quant figures. Competitiveness and Score Profile are separate rule-of-thumb labels applied directly to your raw Combined Score, Analytical Writing Score, and the Verbal-Quant split -- they are not derived from Combined Percentile or Writing Percentile above, so the label and the percentile figures can legitimately disagree at the boundary between tiers. Treat Competitiveness and Score Profile as an independent gut-check, not a restatement of the percentile numbers -- for an actual admissions strategy, compare your real ETS score report percentiles against a target program's typical admitted-student range.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your Verbal Reasoning score (130–170) from your official GRE score report or practice test.
- Enter your Quantitative Reasoning score (130–170).
- Enter your Analytical Writing score (0–6, in half-point increments).
- The calculator shows Combined Score and the percentile rank for each section and overall.
- Review Competitiveness to see how your scores compare against applicants to top graduate programs.
- Use Score Profile (Verbal-Strong, Quant-Strong, or Balanced) to target programs that value your strengths.
How the result changes with Quantitative Reasoning
| Quantitative Reasoning | Combined Score |
|---|---|
| 134 | 289 |
| 144 | 299 |
| 156 | 311 |
| 166 | 321 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher Verbal score ever affect my Quant percentile here?
No -- Quant Percentile is completely inert to Verbal Reasoning in this calculator; the two sections are scored on entirely separate, independent tracks. Raising your Verbal Reasoning score moves Verbal Percentile and Combined Score, but leaves Quant Percentile exactly where it was.
Is this the same percentile ETS reports on my official score report?
Not exactly -- this tool uses a simplified linear approximation for quick estimation, while ETS's real percentile tables are non-linear and are periodically updated to reflect the current test-taking population. Use this for a fast ballpark sense of standing, but check your actual ETS score report (or ETS's published tables) for the precise official percentile.
Why doesn't my Analytical Writing score change my Combined Percentile?
Combined Percentile here is estimated only from the sum of Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning -- Analytical Writing Score is completely inert against it across its full 0-6 range. ETS itself does not publish an official combined-score percentile at all, so this figure is best read as a rough illustrative estimate rather than a precise statistic.
What drives the Analytical Writing Percentile specifically?
Writing Percentile rises consistently as Analytical Writing Score rises across its full 0-6 half-point scale, and it's estimated independently from both the Verbal and Quant sections -- changing your essay score never moves Verbal Percentile or Quant Percentile.
