Study Abroad Cost Calculator

Calculate total semester abroad cost including tuition, living, travel, and exchange rate adjustments.

About this calculator

This calculator totals the cost of a study abroad program across tuition, monthly living expenses, one-time fixed costs, and a currency exchange rate adjustment, then compares the result against staying home. Program Tuition and Exchange Rate Adjustment both move Total Abroad Cost by a meaningful amount across their full ranges, since Exchange Rate Adjustment scales both the tuition and living-cost portions together (100 means no adjustment, above 100 means the local currency effectively costs more in dollar terms). Home Tuition has zero effect on Total Abroad Cost -- it's a comparison input only, used exclusively to compute Difference vs. Home, and doesn't enter the abroad-cost calculation at all.

Monthly Housing, Meals, and Personal Expenses are added together and multiplied by Duration (Months) before the exchange rate is applied, so a longer program compounds the living-cost portion while leaving one-time costs like Round-Trip Airfare untouched. Airfare, Health Insurance, and Visa & Document Fees are treated as fixed costs paid once regardless of program length, and none of them scale with Duration (Months) the way housing, meals, and personal expenses do. The home-comparison figure assumes a flat $1,200/month living cost baseline for staying home, a rough approximation that won't match every reader's actual cost of living. What this doesn't account for: currency fluctuation risk over the actual program dates, scholarship or financial aid that might apply differently abroad versus at home, or one-time program fees beyond the categories listed here.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Program Tuition charged by the study abroad program and the Duration in months.
  2. Add your monthly living costs: Housing, Meals, and Personal Expenses per month.
  3. Enter one-time fixed costs: Round-Trip Airfare, Health Insurance, and Visa & Document Fees.
  4. Set Home Tuition (Same Period) — what you would pay at your home institution for the equivalent time.
  5. Adjust Exchange Rate Adjustment above 100 if the local currency is stronger than USD (increases costs).
  6. Compare Total Abroad Cost to the home institution cost using the Difference vs. Home output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Exchange Rate Adjustment affect both tuition and living costs?

Exchange Rate Adjustment represents how much more (or less) the local currency costs relative to a 100 baseline, and it's applied to both Adjusted Tuition and Adjusted Living together since both are quoted in the destination's local prices. That's why moving this single input has a broader effect on Total Abroad Cost than most individual expense categories.

Does entering a higher Home Tuition change my abroad cost estimate?

No -- Home Tuition only feeds into Difference vs. Home, the comparison figure showing how the abroad program stacks up against staying at your home institution. It has zero effect on Total Abroad Cost, Monthly Cost, or any of the abroad-specific cost breakdowns.

Why don't Airfare and Visa Fees scale with program duration?

Round-Trip Airfare, Health Insurance, and Visa & Document Fees are one-time costs paid regardless of how long the program runs, so this calculator keeps them fixed rather than multiplying them by Duration (Months). Only the monthly living categories -- Housing, Meals, and Personal Expenses -- compound with a longer program.

How reliable is the $1,200/month home living-cost baseline?

It's a rough approximation used to estimate what staying home would cost for comparison purposes, and actual cost of living varies significantly by location, housing situation, and lifestyle. If your real home living costs differ substantially from $1,200/month, treat Difference vs. Home as a directional estimate rather than a precise dollar figure.
