TOEFL Score Conversion Calculator
Convert TOEFL iBT scores to PBT, IELTS, and CEFR levels.
About this calculator
iBT Total Score is nothing more than the sum of your four section scores, so Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing all move it up or down with exactly equal weight -- raising any one section by a point raises the total by the same one point. Every other output on this page is derived entirely from that single total, not from which specific sections contributed the points. PBT Equivalent looks up the real published ETS iBT-to-PBT concordance table across the historical 310-677 Paper-Based Test range, which is not a straight line -- it compresses more tightly at the low end and stretches out near the top, so two 10-point iBT gaps at different parts of the scale can correspond to noticeably different PBT-point gaps. IELTS Equivalent follows the separate published TOEFL/IELTS concordance table and CEFR Level follows TOEFL's own CEFR alignment guidance; both step through fixed score bands -- an iBT Total in the 94-101 range concords to IELTS 7.0, for example, regardless of whether that total came from a balanced score across all four sections or a lopsided one.
Admission Level applies a similar banding to give a rough read on competitiveness. Weakest Section and Strongest Section simply report which of your four raw section scores was lowest and highest -- they don't factor into any of the numeric conversions, they're purely diagnostic, pointing you toward where additional prep would do the most good. Note that TOEFL iBT moved to a new 1-6 primary scale in January 2026; ETS reports a comparable 0-120 total alongside it through a multi-year transition, which is the scale this calculator's conversions use. However, ETS's post-transition score report only shows the four sections as 1-6 bands and a comparable overall 0-120 estimate -- it does not report 0-30 section scores -- so this calculator's four 0-30 section inputs can only be filled in directly from a score report issued before that change; a January-2026-onward report needs its 0-120 overall figure entered a different way (see the FAQ below).

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your TOEFL iBT section scores (0–30 each) from a score report issued before the January 2026 scale change: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
- The calculator sums them into your iBT Total Score (0–120) and converts it to a PBT Equivalent (310–677).
- Review the IELTS Equivalent to compare your proficiency if applying to schools that require IELTS.
- Check CEFR Level (A2 through C2) to understand your language proficiency in the European framework used worldwide.
- Use Admission Level to see whether your score is competitive for top universities, most universities, or requires conditional enrollment.
- Focus additional preparation on your Weakest Section to maximize your total score improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it matter which section my points come from, or only the total?
Only iBT Total Score matters for PBT Equivalent, IELTS Equivalent, CEFR Level, and Admission Level -- all four are derived purely from the sum, so a 100 built from four balanced 25s converts identically to a 100 built from a 30/30/30/10 split. The only outputs that look at individual sections are Weakest Section and Strongest Section, which are purely diagnostic and don't feed into any of the score conversions.
I sat the TOEFL after the January 2026 scale change -- can I still use this calculator?
Not by filling in the four section boxes directly. From January 2026, ETS reports each section as a 1-6 band rather than a 0-30 score, and the overall score is the average of those four bands rather than their sum -- so a post-2026 score report has no 0-30 section figures to enter here. ETS's transitional report does carry a comparable 0-120 overall estimate alongside the new scale; if you only need iBT Total Score's downstream conversions (PBT, IELTS, CEFR, Admission Level) and not the per-section breakdown, you can approximate by splitting that overall figure evenly across the four inputs. This calculator's four inputs are intended for score reports issued before the change.
How reliable is the IELTS Equivalent figure?
It follows the published ETS/IELTS concordance table for the TOEFL iBT 0-120 scale, which bands total scores into IELTS half-point increments (for example, 94-101 concords to IELTS 7.0). ETS itself cautions that a single IELTS band can span several iBT points because the two tests measure skills differently, so treat this as a solid planning estimate rather than a guaranteed institutional equivalency.
Does ETS actually publish a C2 cut score for CEFR Level, or is the top band an estimate?
It's an estimate, not a published cut. ETS's revised legacy CEFR alignment for the 0-120 scale gives clean cuts for B2 (72) and C1 (95), but ETS does not publish an official C2 threshold on the 0-120 total -- C2 only appears as band 6 of the newer 1-6 primary scale. That's why CEFR Level labels scores at or above 110 as "C1 (Advanced) / approaching C2" rather than asserting a firm C2 result: ETS's own language for very high 0-120 scores is that test-takers are "likely to be able to perform at CEFR level C2," which is a softer claim than a confirmed cut score.
What is Admission Level based on?
Admission Level buckets your iBT Total Score into four broad competitiveness tiers -- roughly, 100+ for top universities, 80+ for most universities, 60+ for some universities or conditional admission, and below that likely requiring an English prep program -- as general guidance only. Actual score requirements vary widely by institution and program, so always check the specific school's published TOEFL minimum.
