About this calculator
This calculator rolls five separate sustainability inputs into one weighted score out of 10: materials (30% weight — the heaviest factor, since fiber choice drives most of a garment's lifecycle impact), production process (25%), transport distance (15%), packaging (15%), and end-of-life recyclability (15%). Four of those five are entered directly as 1–10 scores you assign based on the guidance in each field's help text (10 for organic/recycled materials or renewable-energy production, 1 for virgin synthetics or chemical-intensive processes). Transport is the exception — you enter a raw mileage figure, and the calculator converts it into a comparable 0–10 score by subtracting one point for every 1,000 miles shipped, so a 5,000-mile supply chain scores a 5 while anything over 10,000 miles floors out at zero.
Alongside the composite score, the calculator derives a separate carbon estimate in kg CO2 per garment: material and production carbon scale inversely with their respective input scores (a worse material or production score directly implies more estimated carbon), and transport carbon scales directly with the raw mileage figure rather than the capped transport score. The overall score also maps to a 1–5 sustainability grade using fixed thresholds, and the calculator flags whichever of the five factors scored lowest as your "weakest area" — the one place a sustainability initiative would move the needle most. Treat both the score and carbon estimate as directional comparisons between garments rather than certified lifecycle-assessment figures; they're built from user-supplied 1–10 judgments, not measured emissions data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I enter a raw mileage figure for transport instead of a 1-10 score like the other factors?
Shipping distance is something you can look up or measure directly, so the calculator converts it into a comparable score for you rather than asking you to judge it subjectively. It subtracts one point per 1,000 miles from a maximum of 10, so a 5,000-mile supply chain scores a 5 and anything past 10,000 miles floors out at zero before being weighted into the composite.
Why can the carbon estimate and the overall score seem to disagree about how bad transport is?
The overall score uses the capped 0-10 transport score (which floors at zero past 10,000 miles), but the carbon estimate calculates transport carbon directly from the raw mileage figure with no cap. That means two garments shipped 12,000 and 20,000 miles both score a zero on the transport component of the composite score, but the 20,000-mile garment still shows meaningfully higher estimated carbon.
How does the calculator decide which factor is my 'weakest area'?
It compares all five component scores — material, production, the converted transport score, packaging, and end-of-life — and flags whichever one is numerically lowest. Because transport is already converted to the same 0-10 scale as the others before this comparison, a very long supply chain can outrank even a poor material or packaging choice as the weakest area.
Is the carbon footprint estimate a certified lifecycle assessment number?
No — it's a rough directional model built from your subjective 1-10 scores (worse material and production scores are assumed to imply proportionally more carbon) plus a simple per-mile transport factor, not measured emissions data from a lifecycle assessment. Use it to compare garments against each other under consistent scoring assumptions, not as a certified carbon disclosure figure.
