Supplement Budget Calculator

Plan your monthly supplement budget by separating essential vs optional supplements and finding savings.

About this calculator

This calculator is arithmetic for a supplement shelf: it totals what you spend, splits the total into essential and optional buckets, and computes how much trimming the optional bucket could save. Total Monthly Cost is simply the supplement count times the average cost per supplement, and because the two multiply symmetrically, a ten percent change in either moves the total by exactly the same amount — neither one is the lever, they are the same lever. Essential Cost counts only the supplements you flagged non-negotiable (capped at your total count, so entering more essentials than supplements does not invent spending), and Optional Cost is whatever remains. Potential Savings answers a narrower question than it first appears: it is the amount you are over budget, capped at the size of the optional bucket.

If you are $20 over a $100 limit with $60 of optional spending, it reports $20 — the cut needed, not the whole optional pool. If you are under budget it reports exactly zero; the tool never suggests banking headroom. Raising your Essential Supplements count shifts spending between the two buckets without changing the total at all. Assumptions to know: every supplement is priced at the same average, and the budget check is monthly with no annualization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Potential Savings show less than my entire Optional Cost?

Savings are capped at the amount you are actually over budget. If your optional supplements cost $60 but you only exceed your Monthly Budget by $20, the calculator reports $20 — cutting optional spending past the point where you meet budget saves you nothing against that limit.

What happens if I enter more essential supplements than total supplements?

The engine caps the essential count at your total, so Essential Cost can never exceed Total Monthly Cost and Optional Cost floors at zero. You cannot create negative optional spending — the split just becomes 100 percent essential.

Does marking more supplements as essential change my Total Monthly Cost?

No. Total Monthly Cost is the supplement count times the average cost, with no reference to the essential split. Changing Essential Supplements only moves dollars between the Essential and Optional buckets — and can shrink Potential Savings by shrinking the optional pool.

If I'm under budget, what does Potential Savings report?

Zero. The savings figure exists only when Total Monthly Cost exceeds your Monthly Budget, measured as the overshoot amount. Any budget headroom below the limit is not reported as savings, so a comfortable plan always shows $0 there.
