Home Office Setup Cost Calculator
Equipment and furniture cost for productive home office.
About this calculator
This calculator prices a home office setup item by item, costing out each piece on its own and summing three buckets: furniture (desk, chair, monitor arm), technology (monitors, keyboard, mouse, webcam, headset, laptop stand, docking station), and accessories (desk lamp, cable management, surge protector, desk mat). Every priced line — except the two flat-rate items (cable management and surge protector) — scales with a single Quality Level multiplier (0.5x for Budget, 1x for Mid-Range, 2x for Premium/Ergonomic), so moving up a tier roughly doubles what you'd spend on the same footprint rather than swapping in a fixed alternate price list. Monitor and monitor-arm costs also scale with how many external displays you select, and laptop-specific costs (a stand, and a docking station if you also need a monitor) only appear when you flag that you're working from a laptop rather than a desktop.
The estimate assumes typical US retail pricing for each category and won't reflect regional markups, used/refurbished gear, or employer-provided equipment you already own. It also layers in a simple self-employment tax angle: since a dedicated home office setup is 100% deductible for self-employed filers, the calculator multiplies your total cost by an assumed 25% marginal tax rate to show potential savings — a rough planning number, not a substitute for actual tax advice, since your real bracket, standard vs. itemized status, and business-use percentage will change the real deduction. Use the category and item breakdowns to see where the biggest costs concentrate (the chair and desk are usually the largest single-item spends) so you can decide where a splurge is worth it and where a budget option is fine.

- Review the total setup cost broken down into furniture, technology, and accessories.
- Check individual line items (desk, chair, monitors) to identify where to save or splurge.
- If self-employed, use the tax deduction savings output to estimate your net after-tax cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do only some accessory costs change when I switch Quality Level?
Quality Level applies a 0.5x, 1x, or 2x multiplier to almost every line — desk, chair, monitors, peripherals, desk lamp, and desk mat all scale with it. Cable management ($30) and surge protector ($30) are the only two exceptions, since the calculator treats those as commodity items with one typical price regardless of tier.
Why does the docking station cost only show up sometimes?
The $150-times-quality docking station line is added only when you flag both that you're using a laptop and that you need a monitor, because a dock exists specifically to connect a laptop to external peripherals and displays. A laptop used alone, or a desktop paired with a monitor, never needs one, so the cost drops to zero in either case.
How is the tax savings figure calculated, and can I file based on it?
It simply multiplies your total setup cost by an assumed 25% marginal tax rate, reflecting that a dedicated home office is 100% deductible for self-employed filers. It's a rough planning number, not a real deduction calculation — your actual bracket, standard-vs-itemized status, and business-use percentage will all change the true savings.
How much does adding a second or third monitor actually cost?
Each additional monitor adds both its own monitor cost (300 times the quality multiplier) and its own monitor-arm cost (40 times the quality multiplier), since both scale directly with Monitor Count. At Mid-Range quality, that's an extra $340 per monitor beyond the first.
