Water Damage Cost Calculator
Estimate water damage remediation costs including extraction, drying, and floor repair or replacement.
About this calculator
Water damage remediation cost breaks into three components that respond to different factors. Extraction cost (pulling standing water and removing saturated material) and drying cost (equipment rental and monitoring until moisture readings return to normal) both scale with damage category -- water is graded Clean (from a source like a broken supply pipe), Gray (from an appliance or similar less-hazardous source), or Black (sewage or flood water, requiring the most PPE and material disposal) -- since contaminated water demands more aggressive extraction, sanitizing, and drying protocols regardless of floor type.
Repair or replacement cost, by contrast, depends jointly on floor type and damage category together: hardwood is generally the most expensive to restore (sand-and-refinish or full replacement), carpet the least ($4-8/sqft territory, since wet carpet padding is typically just discarded and replaced rather than restored), and tile/vinyl in between -- with each floor type's rate also climbing as damage category worsens, since dirtier water forces replacement over restoration more often. These are industry-typical planning ranges in current dollars, not a quote from a specific restoration contractor -- actual invoices vary with regional labor rates, how quickly extraction began after the loss, and whether mold has already started growing in affected cavities (a separate cost this calculator does not include).

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Affected Area (sqft) from the water damage assessment.
- Select the Damage Category: Clean water (broken pipe), Gray water (appliance), or Black water (sewage/flood).
- Select the Floor Type: Hardwood, Carpet, or Tile/Vinyl.
- Review the Total Estimated Cost with extraction, drying, and repair/replacement broken out separately.
- Use the Damage Category to determine PPE requirements and disposal requirements for affected materials.
- Document moisture readings at start and end of drying for claim support.
How the result changes with Affected Area (sqft)
| Affected Area (sqft) | Total Estimated Cost |
|---|---|
| 250 | $3,750.00 |
| 375 | $5,626.00 |
| 750 | $11,250.00 |
| 1,250 | $18,750.00 |
What each input means
- Affected Area (sqft)
- Total square footage affected by water damage
- Damage Category
- Water source and contamination level; dirtier water costs more to safely remediate.
- Floor Type
- Flooring material affected; each has a different repair or replacement rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does black water damage cost more to remediate than clean water damage?
This calculator prices black water (sewage or flood water) extraction at roughly $9.50/sqft versus roughly $3.50/sqft for clean water from a source like a broken supply pipe -- nearly triple the rate -- because contaminated water carries bacterial and biohazard risk that requires more PPE, more aggressive sanitizing, and stricter material disposal protocols during extraction and drying, independent of what type of flooring is affected.
Does floor type or damage category matter more for the repair cost?
Both matter together -- this calculator looks up a repair rate specific to each floor type AND damage category combination, not either factor alone. Hardwood costs more to repair or replace than carpet at every damage category, but within any single floor type, repair cost still climbs from clean water to gray water to black water, since dirtier water more often forces full replacement rather than restoration.
Why is carpet typically the cheapest flooring to restore after water damage?
Wet carpet and padding are usually discarded and replaced outright rather than dried and restored in place, which this calculator reflects with carpet's repair rate (roughly $4-8/sqft across damage categories) sitting well below hardwood's (roughly $10-15/sqft), where sanding and refinishing -- or careful, more expensive replacement -- is often attempted before a full tear-out.
Does a larger affected area increase extraction and repair cost by the same proportion?
Yes for a fixed damage category and floor type -- extraction cost, drying cost, and repair cost are each affected square footage multiplied by a fixed per-square-foot rate, with no separate fixed base fee in this calculator's model, so doubling the affected area doubles each of the three cost lines and the total.
