Accident Surcharge Calculator

Calculate how much your auto insurance premium increases after an at-fault accident and the total cost over the surcharge period.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates how much an at-fault accident raises your auto insurance premium, using an illustrative surcharge-percentage model (20% for a Minor accident, 35% for Moderate, 60% for Major) applied per at-fault accident on your record. These specific percentages are a simplified, illustrative model, NOT a universal or state-filed rate -- real insurers set at-fault surcharge factors that vary significantly by state, insurer, and driving history, and are typically filed with state insurance regulators rather than published as a single public schedule. Accident Forgiveness, when enabled, waives the surcharge for exactly one at-fault accident: with it on and only one accident on your record, this calculator computes zero surcharge regardless of how severe that single accident was, since there's no surcharge left to apply Accident Severity's rate to.

New Annual Premium is Current Annual Premium plus the computed surcharge, and Total Surcharge Cost multiplies that annual surcharge by Years Surcharge Stays (typically 3-5 years on a real driving record) to project the full multi-year cost of a single at-fault accident. Years Surcharge Stays only affects Total Surcharge Cost and has no effect on New Annual Premium itself, which reflects a single year's surcharged premium regardless of how many years it will persist.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your Current Annual Premium before the accident.
  2. Set the Number of At-Fault Accidents and their Accident Severity.
  3. Enter how many Years Surcharge Stays on your record (typically 3–5 years).
  4. Indicate whether your policy includes Accident Forgiveness.
  5. Review the New Annual Premium, Annual Surcharge Amount, and Total Surcharge Cost over the full surcharge period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the 20% / 35% / 60% surcharge percentages what my insurer actually charges?

No -- these are illustrative percentages meant to demonstrate the general shape of at-fault surcharge pricing (worse accidents cost more), not a universal or state-filed rate. Real insurers set their own at-fault surcharge factors, which vary significantly by state, company, and your specific driving history, and are typically filed with state insurance regulators rather than published in a single public table. Use this as a starting-point estimate, then confirm the real figure with your insurer or a quote.

Why does enabling Accident Forgiveness zero out New Annual Premium's surcharge with one accident?

Accident Forgiveness in this model waives the surcharge for exactly one at-fault accident, so with At-Fault Accidents set to 1 and forgiveness enabled, there are zero "effective" (non-forgiven) accidents left to apply Accident Severity's surcharge rate to -- the result is $0 in added surcharge regardless of how severe that single forgiven accident was. A second at-fault accident on the same record, though, would still be surcharged even with forgiveness enabled, since only the first one is waived.

Why doesn't Years Surcharge Stays change New Annual Premium?

New Annual Premium reflects a single year's premium with the surcharge applied -- it's the same figure every year the surcharge is active. Years Surcharge Stays only multiplies that one-year surcharge amount into Total Surcharge Cost, the output that projects the full cost across every year the surcharge remains on your record (typically 3-5 years for a real at-fault accident).

Does a more severe accident always cost more than a less severe one?

Within this calculator's model, yes -- Accident Severity's rate (20% for Minor, 35% for Moderate, 60% for Major) scales directly with New Annual Premium and Total Surcharge Cost, so a Major accident always produces a larger surcharge than a Moderate or Minor one at the same premium and accident count. In the real world, actual severity classification and its effect on pricing depend on your insurer's specific underwriting rules, which this simplified three-tier model does not capture.
