Wedding Insurance Calculator

Estimate wedding insurance premiums for cancellation, liability, and liquor coverage from wedding cost and guest count.

About this calculator

This calculator prices two separate coverages and adds them together. Cancellation coverage — the core policy that reimburses non-refundable deposits if the wedding is called off — is rated as a percentage of your total wedding cost, but that rate actually falls as the wedding gets bigger: 2.5% for weddings under $15,000, stepping down to 1.6% above $150,000, since insurers see per-dollar risk shrink as fixed costs (venue contracts, etc.) make up more of the total. Two multipliers apply on top: outdoor venues carry a flat 15% weather-risk surcharge, and buying the policy within 30 days of the wedding adds 35% (15% inside 60 days) because there's less time for the insurer to collect premium before a claim could hit.

Liability coverage is priced separately and only applies at coverage tier 1 or 2: a base rate that scales with your liability limit (roughly $100 per additional $1M) is then adjusted up or down by guest count using a log-scaled factor, since a 300-guest reception is riskier than a 50-guest one but not six times riskier. Tier 2 adds a liquor liability rider priced at 40% of the liability premium, itself scaled up further as guest count grows past 500. Note that the "maximum cancellation payout" always equals your full entered wedding cost — this tool doesn't model a separate payout cap or co-insurance clause, so treat it as a ceiling estimate rather than a guaranteed claim amount.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the total wedding budget including all non-refundable vendor contracts.
  2. Enter the expected guest count and the liability limit, then set the number of days until the wedding.
  3. Mark whether the venue is outdoors, which adds a weather-risk surcharge.
  4. Choose a coverage tier: 0 for cancellation only, 1 to add liability, or 2 to add liquor liability.
  5. Review the cancellation, liability, and liquor liability premiums, the total premium, its percent of wedding cost, cost per guest, and the maximum cancellation payout.

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Total wedding cost ($) = 30000, Guest count = 150, Coverage tier (0-2) = 1, Liability limit ($) = 1000000 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total premium
    Total premium = cancellationPremium + liabilityPremium + liquorPremium
    952.53 = $952.53
  3. Calculate Cancellation premium
    Cancellation premium = totalWeddingCost * cancellationRate * outdoorMult * timingMult
    660 = $660
  4. Calculate Liability premium
    Liability premium

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the cancellation rate get cheaper as my wedding budget goes up?

The rate is tiered on total wedding cost: 2.5% for weddings under $15,000, stepping down to 2.2%, 1.9%, and finally 1.6% above $150,000. Insurers see per-dollar risk shrink as the budget grows, since large weddings tend to have more fixed, contractually locked-in costs relative to the variable, cancellable portion — so the calculator applies a lower rate to a larger base rather than the same rate throughout.

What do I get if I choose Coverage tier 0 instead of 1 or 2?

Tier 0 buys cancellation coverage only — the liability and liquor-liability premiums are both set to zero in that case. You'd only see a Cancellation premium in the output. Tier 1 adds a liability premium priced from your liability limit and guest count, and tier 2 additionally adds a liquor-liability rider priced at 40% of the liability premium, scaled up further as guest count grows past 500.

How much more does it cost to buy coverage close to the wedding date?

The cancellation premium gets multiplied by a timing factor: 1.35x if you're buying with fewer than 30 days until the wedding, 1.15x if it's 30–59 days out, and no surcharge at 60 days or more. This only affects the cancellation premium, not the liability or liquor-liability premiums.

Does the Max Cancellation Payout account for a deductible or exclusions?

No — in this calculator, Max Cancellation Payout is always exactly your entered Total wedding cost, with no deductible or co-insurance clause subtracted. Treat it as an upper-bound estimate of what cancellation coverage could reimburse, not a guaranteed claim amount; a real policy would likely apply exclusions or a payout cap the calculator doesn't model.
