Probation Conditions Calculator
Standard and special conditions from offense and risk.
About this calculator
Despite its name, this calculator focuses on the financial burden of probation rather than the legal conditions themselves — it totals up supervision fees, drug testing, electronic monitoring, mandatory program fees, and the opportunity cost of community service across the full probation term. Monthly supervision fees are tiered by supervision level, from $25 for administrative/unsupervised probation up to $175 for high-risk GPS-monitored cases, and get multiplied straight through by the probation length in months since these fees recur every month regardless of behavior. Drug testing frequency is driven by supervision level (intensive supervision automatically assumes 4 tests/month) or, at lower levels, by a simple toggle for whether testing is required at all (2 tests/month), each priced at a flat $25 per test. Electronic monitoring is billed daily ($12/day, converted from the number of months you specify at 30 days/month) and mandatory programs — substance abuse, anger management, DUI school, and similar court-ordered classes — are each assumed to average $2,000, a rough blend across the wide range those programs actually cost.
Community service doesn't carry a direct dollar fee, but the calculator estimates its opportunity cost at $15/hour of lost work time, reported separately from the "hard cost" total so you can see both figures. A one-time $100 intake fee applies to everyone, plus a $250 presentence investigation fee for intensive or high-risk supervision levels. Because supervision fee schedules, testing costs, and program pricing vary widely by county and private-provider contract, treat these totals as a budgeting starting point — and remember that unpaid supervision fees are themselves a common trigger for probation revocation.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Probation Length in months and Supervision Level (standard, intensive, or GPS monitoring).
- Indicate whether Drug Testing is required and set Electronic Monitoring months.
- Enter Mandatory Programs (e.g. DUI classes, anger management) and Community Service Hours.
- Review Total Direct Probation Cost including supervision fees, testing, monitoring, and program costs.
- Check Supervision Fees total — these are paid monthly and must be current to avoid revocation.
- Budget these costs upfront — failure to pay fees is a common probation violation.
How the result changes with Mandatory Programs
| Mandatory Programs | Total Direct Probation Cost |
|---|---|
| 0.5 | $2,300.00 |
| 0.75 | $2,800.00 |
| 1.5 | $4,300.00 |
| 2.5 | $6,300.00 |

Frequently Asked Questions
How is drug testing frequency actually determined — the toggle, or the supervision level?
Supervision level takes priority: if Supervision Level is set to Intensive or High-Risk, the calculator assumes 4 tests per month automatically regardless of the Drug Testing toggle. Only at Administrative or Standard supervision does the toggle matter, adding 2 tests per month when switched on and 0 when off.
Does the $250 presentence investigation fee apply to every case?
No — it only applies when Supervision Level is set to Intensive (ISP) or High-Risk/GPS. Administrative and Standard supervision skip that fee entirely, though everyone pays the flat $100 intake fee regardless of supervision level.
Why is Community Service Opportunity Cost reported separately instead of folded into the main total?
Community service itself carries no court-imposed fee, so it isn't part of Total Direct Probation Cost. The calculator instead estimates the value of the lost work time at $15/hour and reports it only in Total Cost Including Opportunity Cost, so you can see the out-of-pocket total and the time-cost total as two distinct figures.
How is the Electronic Monitoring cost calculated from the number of months I enter?
The calculator converts your entered months into days at a flat 30 days per month, then multiplies by a $12/day rate — so 3 months of monitoring is priced as 90 days x $12, not by calendar-accurate month lengths. It's billed as a lump cost for the full duration you specify, not spread across the broader probation-length total.
