How to Use This Calculator
- Select Record Type: arrest, misdemeanor, or felony.
- Enter Number of Records to Seal and Years Since Case Closure.
- Set Jurisdiction Size — larger jurisdictions often have more backlog and longer waiting periods.
- Indicate Pending Charges or Previous Records Sealed.
- Review Eligibility Score (70+ is generally favorable) and Remaining Waiting Period years.
- Record sealing is different from expungement — sealed records are hidden from public view but not destroyed.
What each input means
- Record Type
- 0=Arrest (no charges), 1=Dismissed/acquitted, 2=Diversion/deferred, 3=Misdemeanor conviction, 4=Non-violent felony, 5=Juvenile record.
- Number of Records to Seal
- Total number of separate records/cases to seal.
- Years Since Case Closure
- Years since the case was closed, charges dismissed, or sentence completed.
- Jurisdiction Size
- 0=Rural, 1=Suburban, 2=Urban. Affects filing fees and processing time.
- Pending Charges
- 0=No pending charges, 1=Has pending criminal charges (disqualifies from sealing).
- Previous Records Sealed
- Number of records previously sealed. Some states limit total sealings.

- Score 0-100 estimating likelihood of approval (70+ = generally favorable).
- Remaining Waiting Period (years)
- Years remaining before waiting period requirement is met. 0 = already eligible.
- Court Filing Fees
- Total court filing fees for all records.
- Attorney Fees
- Estimated attorney fees for petition preparation and filing.
- Total Cost (with Attorney)
- Total estimated cost including attorney representation.
- Total Cost (Self-Represented)
- Total cost if filing without an attorney (filing fees and background check only).
- Estimated Processing Time (months)
- Expected time from filing to court order.
- Employment Benefit Score
- Score 0-100 indicating how much sealing these records may improve employment prospects.
