About this calculator

This calculator scores how much runway you have left before military separation or retirement by comparing the months you have remaining against a standard set of transition milestone deadlines — it measures whether time has run out for each milestone, not whether you've actually completed it (the calculator has no input for what you've done). TAP (Transition Assistance Program) attendance is benchmarked at 12 months before separation, consistent with DoD policy requiring servicemembers to begin the transition process up to a year out. Filing a VA disability claim through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program is benchmarked at 6 months before separation — BDD lets you file before you're out so a rating decision can potentially be ready close to your separation date, though the VA's actual BDD filing window is narrower (between 180 and 90 days before separation); 6 months is used here as a "start preparing" milestone rather than the literal filing-window boundary.

Readiness Score adds 20 points each for five checks — TAP timing, resume/networking start, VA claim timing (if you're filing one), job search progress (if you don't already have a job lined up), and housing search timing — so a servicemember who isn't filing a VA claim or already has a job automatically clears those two checks regardless of timing, since there's nothing left to be behind on. Retirement (as opposed to ETS/EAS) adds retirement-specific milestones — a 12-month-out retirement application deadline and Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) election counseling around 6 months out — and assumes a longer terminal leave period (60 days versus 30) to reflect retirees' typically larger accumulated leave balances.

Why is the VA claim milestone set at 6 months before separation, not the BDD filing window?

The VA's Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program has a specific filing window of 180 to 90 days (roughly 6 to 3 months) before your separation date, but this calculator uses 6 months as a "start preparing now" milestone rather than the literal filing cutoff — gathering medical records and scheduling exams takes time, so starting at 6 months gives you room to file within the actual window rather than scrambling to meet it.

Why does my Readiness Score not penalize me for skipping the VA claim or job search checks?

If you indicate you're not filing a VA claim, or that you already have a job secured, those two checks are automatically satisfied rather than held against you — the scoring only measures whether you're on pace for the milestones that actually apply to your situation, not every possible task on the full checklist.

Why does Retirement separation add extra milestones compared to ETS/EAS?

Military retirement involves administrative steps that a standard end-of-service separation doesn't — submitting a retirement application (benchmarked at 12 months out) and completing Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) election counseling (around 6 months out) — so selecting Retirement as your Separation Type adds both to your milestone list and assumes a longer terminal leave period to reflect typically larger accumulated leave balances at retirement.

What counts toward the Total Milestones number?

Total Milestones counts every checklist item that applies to your selections — TAP attendance, resume/networking start, housing search, DEERS/ID card update, and final out-processing always count, while the VA claim, GI Bill application, job search, and retirement-specific items (application and SBP election) only count in if you indicated they apply to your situation. That's why Total Milestones can differ between two servicemembers with the same months remaining.

Does this calculator know which milestones I've actually completed?

No — there's no input for what you've done. Milestones Still On Schedule and Overdue Milestones only compare the months you have left against each milestone's deadline; a milestone counts as "still on schedule" simply because its deadline hasn't arrived yet, and as "overdue" once fewer months remain than that milestone needs, whether or not you've actually started it.
