Visa Processing Timeline Calculator

Estimate visa processing time by category and service center.

About this calculator

This calculator projects a rough total processing timeline from a base duration per visa category -- 18 months for family-based, 8 for employment-based, 12 for diversity (DV lottery), and 24 for humanitarian categories -- then adjusts that base by Service Center Speed (a 0.8x multiplier for a fast center, 1.0x average, 1.3x slow) and, for employment-based petitions only, an optional Premium Processing election that caps the estimate at roughly one month -- USCIS's real expedited premium processing service is 15 business days for most Form I-129 petitions (H-1B, L-1, O-1) and most I-140 classifications, though it runs 45 business days for I-140 EB-1C multinational manager/executive and EB-2 National Interest Waiver petitions, a sub-category this calculator's single "Employment-Based" category does not distinguish. Months Since Filing does not change the Estimated Total Processing figure at all -- total processing time is a property of the category, service center, and premium processing election alone -- but it does drive Estimated Remaining (total minus months already elapsed, floored at zero once you've passed the estimate) and Completion Progress (months elapsed as a percentage of the total, capped at 100%). RFE Probability (the estimated likelihood of receiving a Request for Evidence) is a fixed, illustrative figure by category alone -- 35% for employment-based, 20% for family-based, and 15% for diversity and humanitarian cases -- not a figure drawn from published USCIS statistics, and it does not change with service center, filing date, or premium processing.

Critically, this calculator models USCIS adjudication time only -- it does NOT model visa-bulletin availability, the per-country annual visa caps and priority-date backlogs that dominate real-world wait times for many family-based and employment-based categories (some categories run 20+ years for high-demand countries). If your category is subject to visa-bulletin retrogression, check the monthly Visa Bulletin from the State Department in addition to this estimate, which by itself can be off by more than an order of magnitude for backlogged categories. Every figure here is a rough planning estimate based on typical historical ranges, not official USCIS processing data -- actual case-by-case processing times vary by service center workload and case complexity far more than this simplified model can capture, and checking your case's actual status against the USCIS processing times tool for your specific service center and form type is the only way to get a current, authoritative estimate.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select Visa Category: Family, Employment, Diversity (DV lottery), or Humanitarian.
  2. Enter Months Since Filing to track progress against typical timelines.
  3. Set Service Center Speed (Fast, Average, Slow) — processing times vary by location.
  4. Toggle Premium Processing if elected for employment-based petitions.
  5. Review Estimated Total Processing and Remaining Months.
  6. Check RFE Probability — high-risk cases should prepare supporting documentation proactively.

What each input means

Visa Category
Type of visa petition category.
Months Since Filing
How many months ago the petition was filed.
Service Center Speed
Speed of the USCIS service center processing your case.
Premium Processing
Whether premium processing is elected (employment-based only).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Visa Category (1=Family, 2=Employment, 3=Diversity, 4=Humanitarian) = 2, Months Since Filing = 3, Service Center Speed (1=Fast, 2=Average, 3=Slow) = 2, Premium Processing (1=Yes, 0=No) = 0 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Estimated Total Processing
    Estimated Total Processing
    8 = 8
  3. Calculate Estimated Remaining
    Estimated Remaining
    5 = 5
  4. Calculate Completion Progress
    Completion Progress
    38 = 38
  5. Calculate RFE Probability
    RFE Probability
    35 = 35

Frequently Asked Questions

Does entering more Months Since Filing change my Estimated Total Processing time?

No -- Estimated Total Processing depends only on Visa Category, Service Center Speed, and Premium Processing; Months Since Filing never enters that calculation. What Months Since Filing does change is Estimated Remaining (the total minus how long you've already waited) and Completion Progress, both of which measure your case's position against that fixed total estimate.

Why is my RFE Probability the same no matter which service center I select?

RFE (Request for Evidence) Probability in this calculator is set purely by Visa Category -- 35% for employment-based, 20% for family-based, and 15% for diversity and humanitarian cases -- and doesn't respond to Service Center Speed, Premium Processing, or how long you've been waiting. These are illustrative, category-level complexity figures this calculator uses to signal relative RFE risk, not statistics published by USCIS, so treat them as a rough starting point rather than a precise prediction for your case.

Does Premium Processing help with any visa category?

In this calculator, only employment-based petitions (Visa Category = Employment-Based) see any effect from electing Premium Processing -- it caps the estimate at roughly one month. USCIS's real premium processing service is 15 business days for most Form I-129 petitions and most I-140 classifications, but 45 business days for I-140 EB-1C and National Interest Waiver filings specifically -- a distinction this calculator's single Employment-Based category doesn't capture, so treat the one-month figure as most accurate for the faster petition types. Electing Premium Processing under any other visa category makes no difference to the estimate here, matching the fact that premium processing isn't available for those categories in the first place.

How much faster is a fast service center compared to a slow one?

A fast service center applies a 0.8x multiplier to the category's base processing time, while a slow one applies 1.3x -- so, holding category and premium processing constant, a case at a slow center is estimated to take about 63% longer than the identical case at a fast center (1.3 / 0.8 = 1.625x). An average center applies no adjustment (1.0x), representing the unadjusted base estimate for the category.
