Cremation vs Burial Cost Comparison

Compare the total costs of cremation versus traditional burial including plot, headstone, and perpetual care.

About this calculator

This calculator compares the total projected cost of cremation against traditional burial by building each figure from separate base costs that scale with a regional cost tier, then adding the specific line items that apply to each option. Cremation Total is the regional base cremation cost plus your Urn Cost; Burial Total is the regional base burial cost plus Cemetery Plot Cost, Perpetual Care Fee, and whatever Headstone Type you select. Because burial carries several cost line items that cremation doesn't, the two totals are built from structurally different formulas, not just different multipliers on the same base. Cemetery Plot Cost and Perpetual Care Fee only ever affect Burial Total — since cremation has no grave plot to purchase or maintain, changing those two inputs leaves Cremation Total completely unchanged no matter how high or low you set them.

Urn Cost works the mirror-opposite way, affecting only Cremation Total. Region Cost Tier applies a multiplier (0.8x for low-cost areas up to 1.5x for high-cost metro areas) to both the cremation and burial base costs, so it scales the whole comparison up or down together rather than shifting the balance between the two options. This calculator provides planning estimates from typical U.S. cost ranges — actual funeral home, cemetery, and cremation provider pricing varies by state, provider, and specific service package, so use these figures for budgeting discussions, not as a binding quote.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select your Region Cost Tier to reflect local funeral market pricing.
  2. Enter the Cemetery Plot Cost, Perpetual Care Fee, and Urn Cost for your situation.
  3. Select the Headstone Type if a burial marker is planned.
  4. Review Cremation Total Cost vs Burial Total Cost side by side.
  5. Check Savings with Cremation to understand the financial trade-off and inform family discussions.

Region Cost Tier
Regional cost tier affects base pricing for services
Cemetery Plot Cost
Cost of a single burial plot (only applies to burial)
Perpetual Care Fee
One-time fee for ongoing cemetery plot maintenance
Urn Cost
Cost of cremation urn (only applies to cremation)
Headstone Type
Type of grave marker or headstone for burial

Frequently Asked Questions

Does raising the Cemetery Plot Cost affect the Cremation Total?

No. Cremation Total is built only from the regional base cremation cost plus your Urn Cost — Cemetery Plot Cost never enters that calculation because cremation doesn't require purchasing a burial plot. Adjusting Cemetery Plot Cost only moves Burial Total and, therefore, the Savings figure between the two options.

Why do Cremation Total and Burial Total use different cost formulas?

Because the two services involve genuinely different line items: burial requires a cemetery plot, a perpetual care fee, and typically a headstone, none of which apply to cremation, while cremation instead has an urn cost that burial doesn't carry. The calculator reflects that real-world structural difference rather than scaling one total from the other.

How does Region Cost Tier change the comparison between cremation and burial?

It applies the same multiplier — from 0.8x in lower-cost rural or southern regions up to 1.5x in high-cost metro or coastal areas — to both the cremation and burial base costs simultaneously, raising a higher-cost region's totals together rather than favoring one option over the other on its own. But region is only one piece of each total: Plot Cost, Perpetual Care, Urn Cost, and Headstone Type are set independently and can already erase burial's built-in cost advantage — or cremation's, if you pick a pricier urn and headstone with a bare-minimum burial — before region ever comes into it. Raising the region tier widens whatever cost gap your other selections already produced; it does not, by itself, guarantee which option stays cheaper, so check both totals rather than assuming the region tier alone decides it.

Should I treat these cost figures as an exact quote from a funeral provider?

No — treat them as planning estimates built from typical U.S. cost ranges by region tier, not a binding price from any specific funeral home or cemetery. Actual pricing varies by state, individual provider, and the specific services or products you choose, so use this comparison to guide budget discussions and get real quotes before making a final decision.
